Boers retreat to north of Ladybrand after exhausting pursuit by British cavalry. Reports from Bloemfontein and Brandfort describe the enemy using mountainous terrain to their advantage and expressing a desire to spare Brandfort from bombardment. Allied forces prepare for further operations toward Kroonstad.
London papers voiced impatience with Lord Roberts and the delayed main advance after last week’s elaborate operations. The Standard notes minimal results, the Daily Chronicle cites exhaustion and delay, and the Post stresses an urgent need for more horses as cavalry returns to Bloemfontein.

London April 80 dispatch says a cavalry reconnaissance three miles northeast encountered 400 Boers. The British forced the Boers from a position north of Karee in a sharp engagement as reported by the Bloemfontein correspondent of the Daily Chronicle.
An outpost battle on Thursday left several Boers dead. The enemy is expected to defend at Kroonstad where they have built extensive trenches using ten mule teams.

Governor W S Taylor returned from Washington and went to Louisville after his Frankfort visit. Local officers and prosecutors knew he was in town but no arrest warrant was served. Indictment returnable the day after others were charged but not entered, now in Judge Cantill’s possession.
The Duluth state normal school project will start immediately after a site dispute is resolved. Contractor McLeod Smith will oversee work. Rumor places R. E Denfield as incoming president. the school opens a year from next fall.
Ex Governor W J Stone Democratic committeeman for Missouri in Kansas City predicted Bryan will be nominated by acclamation at the convention. He declined to be a candidate for vice president and named debatable states including Illinois Indiana Ohio New York Minnesota and California as campaign focus.
