McCullough Wins First Ballot in Vermont Governorship

Gen John G McCullough wins the Vermont gubernatorial race on the first ballot by a wide margin as the joint canvassing committee reports no candidate with a majority and the legislature moves to elect the governor and lieutenant governor. Speaker Merrifield and Senate President Brownell elected with little opposition.

Women golfers vie for nations title at Brookline course

Thirty two women golfers compete for the nations championship at the Country Club Brookline Massachusetts this week. Alice Hay daughter of Secretary of State John Hay and James W Wardeworth marry at The Fells Lake Superior summer home of the bride s father. The stock market recovers after treasury bank reserve relaxation and coal strike settlement talks. The Democratic state convention at Saratoga nominates Birdy Coler for governor and Charlee N Bulger for lieutenant governor with Coler receiving one third of the votes. The platform backs curbing trusts tariff revision eminent domain for coal mines and highway improvements.

Roosevelt to chair coal conference with operators and miners

President Roosevelt summons coal operators and President Mitchell to a Washington meeting on the coal situation. Operators resist concessions while miners expect victory for their side. Federal troops are discussed as protection for workers. The president also contacts six anthracite company presidents and Juli Mitchell, noting the wool supply crisis. Attorney General Knox will attend.

Desperate attempt by Thurston son at Hotel Franklin

Clarence Thurston son of former Senator John M Thurston attempted to end his life by turning on gas in his Hotel Franklin apartments in St Louis. He said liquor fueled the act amid financial distress and obligations he could not meet. The 22 year old Harvard graduate and former secretary to the American Legation at Buenos Aires was hospitalized and out of danger.

Windham County Court Dockets From Dover to Brattleboro

A Windham County court report details a Dover case John A. Davis vs W H Churchill resulting in a $247.38 verdict for the plaintiff on lumber sawing damages. The State vs Joannetta of Bellows Falls ended in a guilty verdict for stealing coffee and whiskey from a Boston Maine freight car.
