Thanksgiving Recess Delays Vermont Legislature Action
Vermont lawmakers face a Thanksgiving recess as a new judiciary bill sparks a scramble for judgeships. The week sees debates on highway financing, taxes, and state investigations while efforts to reform the judiciary drive a rush for openings on the supreme and superior benches.
Waterman Named Superior Court Judge in Vermont
A Montpelier dispatch states that E L Waterman of Brattleboro was unanimously elected to the new Vermont Superior Court. Judges Howell Tyler Munson and Watson form the supreme bench, with Holton Powers and Millon as the first three members of the new superior bench. Waterman, born in Jamaica July 25 1838, was educated locally, read law with Butler Wheeler, admitted 1868, practiced in Wilmington, served in the legislature, and held roles as state's attorney and United States district attorney. He later moved to Jamaica and Brattleboro and served as a U S attorney in Civil War related cases.
