Death of Dr James Conland Brattleboro Doctor Dies After Nine Weeks Illness

Dr James Conland aged 62 died at home 8 Walnut street Saturday at 2 am after a nine week illness of organic heart trouble. He leaves a widow and one son. Funeral held at St Michael's Episcopal church with large attendance from Vermont legislature physicians and medical associations. He was a self made man born in Brooklyn Feb 19 1851 and trained at University of Vermont medical college graduating as top honor man. He practiced in Brattleboro with Dr Holton, later leading Democratic state politics, introducing local option bills and guiding passage of the state license law. He was respected for kindness integrity and public service and was active in many organizations. He was honored with roles on the state tuberculosis commission pension examiners and Vermont Sayings Bank founders.

Dr James Copland remembered for public service and kindness

The Brattleboro community mourns Dr James Copland as a self made man whose education and career earned broad respect. Numerous letters remark his honesty, sympathy, and ready help to friends and neighbors, noting his quiet, gracious demeanor and the wide affection of those who knew him.

Popular Memorial Planned for Dr Cowland Grave

A memorial fund is proposed to honor Brattle dore’s beloved physician Dr Cowland with a rugged boulder grave marker. Citizens may contribute up to one dollar through The Reformer and The Phoenix offices within two weeks, with local supporters urging broad participation and noting a modest tribute to his public service and love of the sea.
