Effects of the big storm flood Brattleboro toll bridge and rail damage
A severe storm drove ice and high water across western and central Vermont, submerging highways and the toll bridge at Brattleboro. The Connecticut River surged, destroying parts of the bridge and damaging the pumping station at Wort River. Rail service faltered as Westminster and Vernon washouts blocked lines and the Vermont and Keene routes faced delays, with Bellows Falls pulp mills suspending operations and roads iced over.
