Brattleboro Water System Offer Details Crowell Proposal

The Water Board offers 260000 for Crowell's system complete with Sunset Lake works and 340000 for the Chestnut Hill and Sunset Lake systems. The plan includes removing cottages near Sunset Lake, building a large pipe network, lowering and damming ponds, new hydrants, and rights transfers to Chestnut Reservoir and Sunset Lake Water companies. Completion expected by Nov 1, 1907 with Brattleboro paying 250000 and water firms delivering all properties and rights, under board and engineer supervision, and subject to health requirements.

House of Correction hearing adjourned to March 8

The investigating committee examined witnesses regarding the house of correction at Rutland. Lottie Monahan of Harlington testified about a prior incident involving Marvin McClure, who is serving seven years for complicity in a crime. McClure appeared with a lawyer requesting a trial. Monahan was later arrested in Burlington for the next committee meeting. Sheriff Kelley of St. Albans testified about mileage schemes, noting enforcement of law with charges often paid by inmates and fees benefiting Harlington.

Death of Walter Childs on Green Street ends in self infliction

Walter A. Childs of Brattleboro died at his Green Street home yesterday afternoon from a self inflicted gunshot wound fired several hours earlier. He was conscious after the shot and spoke of being tired discouraged and lonely. he intended to end his life and arranged the deed in advance. Medical aid and church officials were summoned as friends gathered, with a long obituary noting his modest generosity and public service. He was a Dem ocrat active in politics for decades and left two sons, a brother, and many relatives.
