District Meeting Votes on Tax Collector Postponement

The district met Tuesday evening largely to choose a tax collector for the coming year. A motion to postpone the tax collector election until after the town meeting was approved by a large majority, while other articles related to officers a supervisor of grades and a fence commitment were approved. The session adjourned after formal business and postponements.

Badly Hurt by Mowing Machine at Bellows Falls

Victor Brinn of Bellows Falls was seriously injured Wednesday while clearing a clogged mowing machine along Rockingham road. A frisky horse accidently started, sending knives along his leg, nearly severing one and badly cutting the other, with amputation possible for one limb. Chittenden county Democrats met in Burlington convention nominating a fusion ticket amid even partisan distribution.

Maame Sentenced to Four Years for Fake Doctor Scams

Edward H. House of Brooklyn pleaded guilty to four counts of larceny in Greenfield and Northfield trials. He posed as an eye doctor visiting elderly victims, swindling families of hundreds of dollars by claiming to treat and operate on their relatives. Judge Whitecock sentenced him to up to four years in state prison, with initial solitary confinement, after a retroactive Bristol jail term. A separate escape from Rutland’s house of correction saw John Babbitt and Warden Curtis’s 17 and 10 year old associates flee, tunneling under a dining-room foundation before being recaptured.

County strong on crops special town meeting
