Freight train derailment near Bellows Falls injures none

A mixed freight split from a Bellows Falls Rutland line at 6 30 Monday morning rolled down a 30 foot embankment two miles north of the town. Thought cause is a loose wheel or broken truck. No injuries reported. A tobacco growers convention will be held in Springfield Mass on Tuesday to discuss reform of handling and marketing by the Coon Valley Tobacco Growers corporation with addresses by New England figures and a plan of organization.

Howe and Kelley Plan Readsboro Dam and Power Plant

W. J. Howe of Readsboro and E. W. Kelley of Providence plan a dam at the foot of Howe pond and an electric system utilizing 800 feet of fall to generate about 2000 power for Readshoro and the upper Deerfield valley, feeding toward North Adamy.

Westminster road widened by three rods opposite local churches

At Tuesday meeting of the court commissioners Bo and M railroad representatives and Westminster selectmen decided a highway three rods wide must be provided in the Westminster road opposite the Church Weston and Corlew places A meeting will be held at the probate office on April 28 to hear damages questions.

Manley Hurt by Colt in East Dummerston Barn

P W Manley of East Dummerston suffered severe bruises after entering a colt stall by mistake. The frightened animal knocked him down and trampled him Saturday night, confining him to bed with no serious outcomes expected.

Rockingham Town Wins Damages Dispute Over Electric Road

The supreme court affirms the county court ruling in Fairbank v Rockingham. Damages awarded total 2.5 percent plus 86000 for removal from the street. Town liable for any further electric road damages.

Larceny Charge Against Stancliff Pleads Guilty in Wilmington

Stancliff son of Frank Stancliff faced Warren R. Boyd in Wilmington on larceny charges for taking over 100 books from the village schoolhouse and stealing money. He pled guilty to both counts and was fined with costs totaling over 3, paid by his father.

Sawyer Injured Moving Lumber At Halifax Mill

Jeremiah Sprague of Jacksonville, employed by W. B. Warren as a sawyer, suffered a serious leg injury when a car of lumber moved on the track caused him to fall between the timbers at the Halifax mill Saturday. He was removed from the mill and is bedridden at Mr. Warren's residence.

Austin Riceslack Hamilton Fight Declared Draw in Narrow Bout

The 15 round 126 pound match at North Walpole Thursday night ended in a draw. The early rounds were even with rapid exchanges in the final three, both fighters staying on their feet as referee W L Crowley of Hartford, Conn, rendered the verdict.

Rockingham Vote Falls Short in February Referendum

In Rockingham on February 3 the town did not surpass the required majority by eight votes. Claims circulated that liquor interests in North Walpole NH influenced voters using money and liquor. The Crescent Bottling Co offers 1000 to the hospital fund as proof of any company influence related to the vote.

Elevator accident injures Windham hotel owner in Bellows Falls

Landlord Darwin Ryder, 83, of Hotel Windham, suffered severe injuries after becoming entangled in an elevator between the cage and wall on the hotel’s third floor. He was wedged and had to be freed as woodwork was cut away. Ryder, one of the state’s oldest hotel operators, opened Hotel Windham last spring after directing Addison hotel in Middlebury for three years.

Brattleboro Votes On Liquor Control System Next Tuesday

Brattleboro residents will decide by ballot whether to allow licenses under the local option law or to prohibit liquor sales. The town meeting will end by 3 PM with voters marking yes for licenses or no for prohibition.
