Seymour H. Wood of St. Albans Chosen Commander of the Department

Seymour H. Wood, longtime veteran and local leader from St. Albans, was chosen commander of the Vermont Department of the Grand Army of the Republic at the department encampment held in Brattleboro. The event brought a large turnout of veterans and Relief Corps members, with officers elected for the ensuing year and ceremonies concluded with a camp fire and public program.

Brother shoots brother in Vermont farm dispute

On Feb 22 in Trout, Vermont, Jay Johnson, 41, was shot dead by his brother Fred W. Johnson following a heated quarrel over property. Fred, 95, claimed self defense as deputies await the state attorney. Both men had recently been promised the farm by their aging parents, and Fred surrendered to Deputy Sheriff J W Melendy after the incident.

Brattleboro Town Meeting Features Three Selectmen Tickets

Frattleboro's town meeting will offer three ticket options for selectmen with largely the same candidates. On the Peoples ticket the slate is Hooker Walker Putnam and Warren L. Walker. Independents add Boyden. Citizens list Richardson Weatherhead and Boyden. Names on nominating panels include Robbins Cowles Rohwern and many others, reflecting local divisions over leadership, experience, and governance.

Sudden Death of J O Sanford in Vermont

J O Sanford of Stamford died suddenly in a Clarkburg Massachusetts street yesterday from heart failure. A renowned highway construction expert, he served on the Vermont state highway commission and as state Subway commissioner under Gov McCullough. He held the state senate seat and 12 years on the Vermont Board of Agriculture. Born in Readsboro in 1896, he lived much of his life in Stamford. He leaves a widow, two sons and a daughter.

New Railroad Yard at Bellows Falls by New York Central

New York Central purchased about 240 acres at Bellows Falls for 2000 to use as a yard and to erect a locomotive round house. A case of extreme cruelty is alleged in Norwich involving a woman who allegedly administered ether to her three year old child and left the unconscious child in a cold closet. The child’s feet hands and nose were reportedly frozen. officials hope life can be saved as they await developments.
