Brattleboro officials detail 1905 expenses including sewer extension on Dirk Avenue, firehouse repairs, and new day police with cost analysis. Minority report urges ending the day officer role to save money and avoid increased taxes while proposing dedicated funds for water and debt needs.
Harvey W Saunders chief engineer reports eight bell alarms and nine stilt alarms in the past year. The 107 member force includes two steamer and two hose companies, hydrant units, ladder, chemical, and combined hose chemical wagons. Repairs urged for steamer house floor and reservoir cover. calls for more hydrants, rent reductions, and immediate water supply improvements. The department emphasizes chemical use reducing water damage and insurance costs, with 71 percent of fires extinguished by chemicals to date. Walter C. Noyes of Old Lyme elected president of the West River Railroad Company which takes over the mortgage of the narrow gauge Montpelier and Whitehall line. The new capital is $150000 with plans to issue bonds and convert to standard gauge, including a branch to Peru Stratton and Winhall timber districts, to be operated by the Central Vermont Railway.
An independent island league forms a three-team race starting May 13. Dunham Brothers, Company I and the Athletics will field local players led by Ferriter and Grady, with a packed schedule through September 4 featuring frequent Dunham versus Athletics and Company I clashes.
