Plans progress for a brick one story fire house on Monmouth Street between Main and Braddock. The 20 by 35 foot building will have a reel room and a hall, no tower, with work to start soon and aim to be ready before the Firemen's Convention.
Mr Frank H Bowley a New York resident spends a few days in the city recalling his youth He was born and raised here and formerly ran a drug business in the building now housing the Wheat Drug Company
At a recent meeting a four member committee was appointed to confer with the Fire Committee on erecting a structure. The plan aims to provide a new facility for the South End Hose Company, with details to be arranged and reported.
Byrd McDonald, employed at Jackson Dehaven's saw mill, stepped on a track during dinner hour and his right leg was struck by a seven ton cart. The ankle was dislocated and the bone above it broken. Dr. Janney dressed the wound and McDonald was sent to his father Stephen McDonald in Neffs town. Dr. Love provided surgical help. The engineer's quick action reversed the engine and brakes, saving the leg.
John B. Haines the tobacconist and Mary Elizabeth Ellesser were married at the M E Church South parsonage by Rev S K Cox. A small group attended and the couple left for Washington before settling in the city.
J H Grier and Company sash and door factory runs from 6 30 a m to 7 p m with a half hour dinner break. Orders come from Harrisonburg and Washington as new workers are hired daily amid an unusually busy period.

A committee from Hiram Lodge A F and A M paid a cordial call on President McKinley. They were received in the cabinet room with warm hospitality and given a long audience, recalling McKinley’s own Masonic initiation in this city. The exchange covered Winchester memories and his desire to visit the lodge.
Judge Newman orders a special grand jury for May 10 to hear charges against a man named Wilson alias for robbing the Yates store in Woodstock. Wilson, once fugitive in Reading, Pa., was recaptured by Detective Geo R Fra of Woodstock and jailed in Shenandoah county. Other Shenandoah county robberies tied to him include Horsey Atwell and Bowman stores. Wilson has confessed to the Yates robbery.
Mr. Hugh Grant of our city drives Dora Lee with Mr. Wm. L. Haymaker when a dog darts from Hahn's mill area frightening the mare. She leaps and falls into a muddy roadside spot but sustains no injury to the fine horse.
