The Rev Sam Small, a reformed drunkard, delivered a powerful temperance discourse at the M E Church South last night. He argued against liquor traffic with force and clarity and is to preach both morning and night tomorrow and speak to men at 3 30.
Mr. Fred Glaize, Winchester Baseball Club representative, was injured at Strasburg Junction on his way to Edinburg. A train door closed on his left fingers, severing three, amid immediate first aid by Dr. Burner. He continued to Edinburg to report on Winchester’s interests, though fears of permanent damage arose.
Four of five teams met in Edinburgh to set up a permanent Valley League with Woodstock hosting on May 15. Front Royal awaits its team while Luray and Harrisonburg were left out for distance. Each team covers own expenses. umpires funded by a common pool. towns appoint umpires for most games. A strict transfer rule requires unanimous manager consent to switch teams. Schedule to be adopted June 1.
Twelve wheelmen led by Harry Baker and George Bailey rode to Stephenson and back along the Martinsburg pike. On the return rain fell heavily and a rider’s wheel broke three miles from town. Helpers urged others to press on, leaving the stranded cyclist to trudge home with his broken wheel and whistling a song.
The young ladies and teachers of the Episcopal Female Institute host an evening bazaar at Institute Hall to aid the Boone Memorial School in Wuchang China. Miss Lilly Ward of our city serves as a missionary there and all helpers are urged to contribute to the fundraiser for Chinese children.
Republicans gathered in Court House Hall elected George Henry Haines chair and Robert Gibbons secretary. Ward representatives selected councilmen William R. Willis George W. Kremer C. W. Ramsburg Scott A. Affleck and magistrates John R. Jones S. F. Garton with ward choices to follow for approval.
Mr. Charles Gorsuch slipped through a gutter hole on Main Street near Faulkner's and needed bystander help to free his foot. He sustained only minor bruises. Mr. William Haymaker fell last night and suffered a cut on his head, treated by Dr. W A Bell. Mr. William Shiner cut his thumb this morning while slicing meat.
Creditors filed in the Circuit Court of Frederick County to apply the Maxwell Trust Fund now held by H. Hansbrough to Maxwell's debts. Conrad Kownslar of Berryville represents the plaintiffs, and Hansbrough is expected to act to protect the fund.
The Broadway Methodist Church pastor Rev W G Starr will deliver the baccalaureate sermon for the Valley Female College at the M E Church South on Sunday June 6. The college faculty and students commend securing this eminent and eloquent divine for the annual sermon.

The thief from E. L. Yates & Son's Woodstock store was recaptured about 15 miles from Réa Pa by the local chief of police. A letter from Woodstock led to the arrest after a girl wrote and a Woodstock sergeant spotted the clue. A boy hid in a pigeon house and alerted authorities. the arrest followed yesterday morning. Geo F. Fravel of Woodstock traveled to Reading for Wilson and planned to return Monday.
A letter to the City Solicitor reports a fund from the Handley estate ready for pro rata distribution to specific bequests, notably the 350 000 library legacy. After tax reserve, about 50 587 remains for distribution. Winchester's share around 30 000. Executors hold 113 616 in personal assets not yet liquidated, with conversion expected before the next annual period end and city action to secure the fund.
Presiding Elder Jos R Wheeler of Cumberland will preach tomorrow evening at the Market Street M E Church. The sermon aims to draw congregants from Cumberland and nearby areas to the service.
