Post office users clash with renters over night mail distribution and lobby crowds. Renters expect priority at the window, but crowding often forces officials to manage protests and consider general delivery. Courtesy from the postmaster and staff is cited as keeping order.
A customer spotted smoke from a window display at Sartelle’s No 5 North Main last night around 9 30. A small lamp behind a Christmas scene fireplace ignited a fire but was extinguished quickly, preventing damage to the store and preserving a stock of inflammable sweets. The firm credits timely intervention and safety for the avert.
The Kern and Campbell firm in western Winchester reports brisk business in corn meal and hominy. Yesterday a large corn shipment arrived and on Saturday 150 barrels or 1,500 bushels or 54,000 pounds of Clarke county grain were received for milling.
Madison Lodge No 6 I O F elected officers in regular session last evening. Robert I Kurtz Jr was made Noble Grand. H H Baker became Vice Grand. Robert L Gray was named Treasurer. Howard Shockey was Recording Secretary. Jno M Steck was Permanent Secretary. Richard Gray was Chaplain.
Charles Chiles of Kernstown, brother of County Treasurer S M Chiles, lies in critical condition with consumption and is expected to die soon. The treasurer's office in Winchester is closed. About 35, he is son of John B Chiles and formerly worked as a skilled machinist in Kansas City before returning home with his wife to Kernstown.
Week ending December 11 1897 list of letters remaining in the Winchester post office. Calls for these letters should state advertised and pay one cent per letter received. Names include Miss Carter Miss Renner John Johnson Mary Meyers Charles Miller Anna Renner and others.
A six pound rifle shell exploded earlier is on Capt. Boyd's desk. Samuel Totty found it on Main street during water extension work in front of Capt. Geo. W. Kurtz's home. Several other war relics were unearthed as well. The shell lay four feet below the surface.
The Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church chapter of the Epworth League will meet this evening at the church for a social and business session. All are invited to attend.
Mrs Lemuel Pingley of south Braddock street cut a deep gash in her left wrist last evening while using a sharp table knife. Her injury prompted medical attention and the incident was reported for the local brief.
The Star’s press broke yesterday afternoon when about half the issue printed. A young operator caused the break during operation. The Times allowed the remainder to be printed on its large press. Ink was stiff in the cold room, but the issue was produced with effort and readers are asked to pardon the accident.
Leaders met at Dr. Jas R. Graham’s home and agreed on a seven day program with sermons at Reformed Church Loudoun Street Presbyterian Braddock Street M E Lutheran Kent Street Presbyterian United Brethren Market Street M E and a closing sermon by Rev S K Cox. Topics include Confession and Thanksgiving The Church Universal Nations and Their Rulers Families and Schools Foreign Missions Home Missions and more.
The Louisville Courier Journal last Friday published a two column obituary for R A Robinson. It traces his life from birth on October 17 1817 at Spring Hill farm near Louisville to his death Thursday night at his home, acknowledging his beneficence toward education and his role as founder donor for Shenandoah Valley Academy. A portrait accompanies the notice.
Clerk R L Gray issues a marriage license to Thos Eugene Gaither of Summit Point and Miss Mary F Mason of nearby Summit Point setting the date and eligibility for marriage.
Dr S K Cox delivered an address before Turner Ashby Camp last night by invitation. Rain kept some away but the room was filled including a few ladies. He spoke of his army service as home chaplain and Confederate supplies agent and shared sympathetic and humorous incidents. He read an original poem and appealed to the veterans. The Camp voted thanks and extended a welcome for future visits.

The funeral for the late Mrs. Lewis N. Barton was held at her father's residence on west Piccadilly Street at 3 o clock. Rev. Dr. H. M. White and Rev. N. P. Dame conducted the service, with interment at Mt Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers included E. H. Boyd, H. K. Russell, R. W. Stone, R. A. Beverley, H. D. Fuller, and J. B. Neill of Berryville. Floral offerings were described as beautiful.
A plea asks readers to excuse late delivery as carriers braved darkness and rain to reach subscribers. The note defends carriers for missing a few deliveries yesterday and urges clemency from the audience.
Mr. M. L. Capper rode along Water Street yesterday afternoon when his horse fell near the Hook and Ladder hall. Neither rider nor horse was injured in the mishap.
Miss Edith Girtoin of 118 East Leicester Street sustains a painful cut to her left thumb while using a sharp table knife this morning.
