Rain slowed work on the Main street water extension as crews shoveled earth blocking gutters and flooding cellars. Workers kept pipes laid and gutters cleared despite mud, while merchants and residents faced hardship and officials bore the burden of the delay.
The Union Fire Company holds its regular monthly meeting tonight at 7 30. The Sarah Zane Fire Company also meets in the hall tonight as announced.
A Winchester minister, seeking a parishioner’s home, knocked on the wrong door. Acomely resident answered and joked inviting him in. he withdrew when realizing the blunder. Both were startled by the harmless mix up and offered no explanation.
Mr. Wm. H. Derr died at his Baltimore home yesterday morning at 74. He once lived in Frederick, moving from Frederick in 1867 or 1868, and ran a dry goods store on Main Street. He later moved to Baltimore with his family and left behind a large, respected family.
Residents on south Main street were awakened by a dog yelping between 1 and 2 a.m. Henry Royse found the animal suspended by its fore-paws, having attempted to jump the fence and become caught.
Mrs. Nancy Anderson residing with her daughter Mrs. Joseph Nulton at 35 West Water Street suffered a stroke of paralysis yesterday morning. Her throat and vocal organs were affected and she was very ill for a time, but she is somewhat better today.
Mr. T. H. Savage of this city is named aid-de-camp to Commander Jnc W Stebhens of the Virginia and North Carolina department G A R and also to Commander Johnson of the Maryland department G A R.
A small dog frightened a police officer who fired several times, nearly striking the dog’s owner, in a nighttime incident. The report notes the officer startled by the pup as it leaped toward him.
The Friendship Fire Company drew one of its biggest crowds this year as officers may be elected on Thursday January sixth. Capt Jasy M Haymaker presided with Secretary J E Correll present. band finances were debated and a plan to form a new musical group was approved. invitations for a forthcoming oyster supper were noted and a Shepherdstown fair invitation declined.
Miss Maude Carper suffered a large splinter that pierced her foot at school on Wednesday. The injury pierced the instep of her shoe and left her foot sore and painful.
A party working in a Piccadilly meat market next to Cooper's wholesale is noted for a heavy eating episode. The individual consumed a quart of oysters sauerkraut a three pound chicken two loaves of bread six cups of coffee and then returned for more oysters and chicken which were refused.
Officer Geo E McCartney arrested William Summers yesterday after a pistol was fired near Berryville last Monday and Summers was jailed. Berryville authorities continued the search this morning amid claims Summers acted irrationally as bystanders feared a maniac.
Desperado Warren Corder, famed for a checkered career, was shot in the lip by Dan Wood, a Brunswick yardmaster, while Corder attacked him as he drove near Brunswick. Wood acted in self defense. Corder is in a dangerous condition.
The special term of the Circuit Court presided by Judge Nicol continued this morning. The suit of Whiting & Ward as special receivers against Geo W Strother and others was adjourned to 2 pm to secure special witnesses.
Mr I F Fawcett of Fawcett's Gap reports two blooded calves stolen from his farm last Monday night. The calves belonged to Mr R B Fauntleroy and were kept on the farm for pasturage. Fawcett believes he knows the likely thief.
Authority sources say C H Hardy will take the postmaster position on Monday, but Hardy remains non communicative about the appointment.
The Union Band drew several graceful ladies to a rehearsal last night. They complimented the musicians and enjoyed the music rendered by the band members.
Charles Grove and Lizzie Cain were married last evening at the Baptist parsonage by Rev. Eugene B. Jacksen.
