Firemen Save Buildings as Fire Guts Hillyard Warehouse

Firefighters quickly controlled a blaze that started when a match was struck in a rear warehouse behind Gardiner B. Hillyard’s store at 103 North Mall. Oil turpentine and paints on the floor fed the fire, seven water streams poured by skilled crews, and heavy damage was limited to the warehouse area with about six thousand dollars in losses.

Solhters to Be Inspected by Virginia Regiment

The annual inspection of Company I, Second Virginia Regiment, will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the barracks on North Main Street. Capt. James P. Reardon ordered all officers and members to attend, with payment of 10 per man for those present. Col. Jo Lane Stern will inspect. khaki uniform, tar shoes, service hat required. guns and side arms must be cleaned beforehand and all nonuniform property delivered to the quartermaster sergeant.
