Freight train master repels hold up in Chambersburg

Forest fires threaten South Mountain area near Winchester
Report from travelers arriving in Winchester recounts forest fires burning over three miles in length and nearly a mile wide on South Mountain between Weverton and Brownsville. Fires, though checked at the lower mountain end near Weyverton, reignited, forcing farmers and mountain residents to fight through the night to halt the advance. Large timber losses, rails, and cords of wood destroyed on both sides of the mountain are expected to run into the thousands. Continuous smoke and smoldering areas remain as crews monitor for flare ups.
