In a Handley library extract from The Heart of a Soldier, anecdotes recount Gen. George Pickett’s wartime service, West Point path via Lincoln, and a dramatic 1865 Richmond scene where Abraham Lincoln arrives at Pickett’s home seeking news, illustrating enduring bonds.
Daniel W Feltner a prominent eastern Frederick County farmer and longtime church worker at Red Bud United Brethren died at his home near Burnt Factory at 7 30 pm after Bright's disease. He leaves a large family including five sons and six daughters and will be buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery after services at Burnt Factory Church conducted by Rev. Geo W Stover.
The Famous Rutan's Song Birds, a four performer act with two notable child performers, are booked to open a three night engagement at the Auditorium on Thursday. Also appearing Mabel Ray and Co. with Billy and the Girl and special scenery. Admission 10 cents. Dock Anderson, Washington chiropodist, visiting town for a few days. He treats sore feet and bunions and will call at homes on request.
In Durban Natal on November 19 the East Indian labor strike has led to a dangerous situation with seven thousand workers dynamiting buildings and open revolt against the government. Bands threaten to burn towns as life and property fall under threat amid widespread unrest.
Rebels seize six towns near Mexico City closing in on Huerta as the Veracruz rail line risks disruption. The New Hampshire battleship and three British cruisers head to Tuxpan amid fears for Americans. Huerta orders 150 800 troops and defies the United States while awaiting Congress message.
The pope personally blessed two hundred pilgrims from Mexico and expressed hope that peace would soon be restored in that country. The blessing occurred in Rome on November 19.
The Pannonia of the Cunard line arrived in New York with Balmes passengers rescued from a burning ship en route from Bermuda to Cadiz. The rescue saved 103 lives before a fierce storm followed the transfers. A public auction of building lots in Harris Orchard is planned for 2 o'clock Saturday.
National Democratic Chairman McCombs is in Washington and will not meet President Wilson until Friday. He is expected to be chosen to direct the campaign against Tammany Hall in New York as it reorganizes its defeated forces.

The trial of E. Graham Wilson, Jefferson County farmer, charged with criminal assault on Miss Kete Turner on June 6, began before Judge Woods in Charlestown. A jury was seated and opening statements given. defense denies the assault. Punishment if convicted ranges from 7 to 20 years or death.
The show features a two reel feature The Curse of the Golden Land Part 1 and Part 2 along with Pathe Weekly and Vita releases Coast of Chance Seliz and Bingle s Nightmare. Audiences will enjoy a great program with a special Pathe Weekly release and four additional features.
Hans Schmidt, accused killer of Anna Au Muller, was brought to trial in New York. Police intervened to control a crowd of women as five strong men dragged him into the courtroom. Schmidt proclaimed his guilt while his defense argued insanity.
An automobile owned by Mr I S McNeill, a traveling salesman from Harrisonburg, was destroyed by fire on the Tough road near Mr John McNeil’s farm in Hampshire County, W Va. The blaze started when the carburetor backfired, and with no water nearby he had to run for buckets, returning too late to control the flames.
A young work mare valued at about 200 dollars was struck by Baltimore & Ohio train No. 1 near a paper mill crossing south of town. The mare suffered severe injuries and was humanely killed by Dr. J. E. Noonan. Four other colts were scratched. investigation continues into how they escaped enclosures.
Dr M T Merrill of Dayton foreign mission secretary of the Christian Church will give a lecture on Japan at Winchester Christian Church Friday evening November 21 at 730. The lecture will be illustrated with stere optic icon views and is free. Merrill just returned from Japan where he inspected mission fields and many pictures shown will be from his trip. Also 19 building lots with fruit trees will be sold at public auction Saturday at 2 o'clock.
The nomination of H. H. M. Pindell, editor of the Peoria Journal Star, for ambassador to Russia will go to the Senate tomorrow, and a fight against the confirmation is anticipated.
A wireless message reports the steamer Sado traveling from Seattle to Yokohama is burning at sea. The incident occurred off Yokohama as of November 19 in a sea danger situation involving the vessel Sado bound for this port.
Mr. C. E. Gousgill secretary of the Frederick County Holstein Breeders Association returned from Cleveland with 47 cows and four registered bulls. A Friday meeting will distribute the stock to farmers who ordered them. Cattle will be sold at cost. cows and heifers usually bring 60 to 100 dollars and bulls up to 17 dollars or more. The association has sold 163 head to date. Cowgill was accompanied by J. S. Haldeman who returned to Winchester for urgent business.
Mr. and Mrs M Parkins marked their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a November 12 gathering at their daughter Mrs Fs Birthright home in Washington DC. They wed in 1863 at Col W D Anderson residence near Staunton VA, officiated by Rev William E Balxer. Parkins, a Confederate veteran, hails from Frederick County and Mrs Parkins was sister to the late Capt J C Van Fossen of Winchester.
Navajo tribesmen march with threats and fortifications in the hills as they call on all tribes to join. Thirty federal deputies are assigned to restore order and a detachment of U S cavalry has been requested. Renegades wanted for crimes are being guarded by the Indians.
A weather update for Virginia notes generally fair conditions tonight with warmer temperatures in the southern portion. Thursday will bring fair skies with partial cloudiness in the northern region.
George Reitlager known as the no Swordsman in France dueled Uietikoff of the Bulgarian army on behalf of Pierre Loti. Reitlager, who renewed the Bulgarian quarrel with a blade to the breast and head, was declared victor after the suburbs duel with rapiers.
Two Hagerstown men, C. D. Hoch and Hays, were severely injured when poles bearing a massive twelve thousand gallon tank toppled during erection for Apple Orchard Company near Rest County. Both workers were unconscious for about thirty minutes before help arrived. Hoch remained in serious condition and was transported in a railroad car mattress to Erstadt. The accident delays the Hoch Manufacturing contract by at least a week.
Miss Mamie Hughes, tied to Winchester families, was seriously injured when struck by a high powered automobile in Atlanta, Ga. She is recovering at her aunt Mrs. Edward Purcell in Harrisonburg, Va. The driver R. E. Brehm, who operated the car, was fined $50.75 in Atlanta police court. The automobile belonged to Otto B. Dingerhoef, a wealthy Atlanta businessman.
Rev John Long Jackson rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church Harrisonburg Va spends days with Mr and Mrs C Stan Cr ic at Kernstown in Rockingham County. He has been at his old home visiting friends in Winchester and nearby areas during the spring period.
