Indiana health board cites Chicago spending on three preventable diseases totaling over 10.25 million dollars in six months of 1913. Dr. A W Freeman will lecture in Middletown tonight at eight, Gainesboro school house Tuesday at eight, and Stephens City Saturday at two.
The United States board of mediation and generalification announced that the New Orleans railroad strike has been settled to the satisfaction of both sides and that workers are returning to their jobs this afternoon.
Washington November 17 The Navy Department refused to release details of the court martial of Lieutenant Steele U S Navy convicted of intoxication and scandalous conduct at the Perry centennial celebration He was sentenced to five years hard labor at Philadelphia penitentiary and his shoulder straps were torn away and sword broken
A warrant was issued in Washington on November 17 for the arrest of Lucy Burns, chairwoman of the suffragettes congressional committee, charging her with violating the law against marking sidewalks in Washington.

Troop A of Cleveland with other selected National Guard cavalry will join the regular cavalry camp of instruction in Winchester next summer. The War Department approves, and the camp will simulate Civil War battle conditions. If the Cleveland unit stays, it will be kept near regular army standards and participate in a Washington review.

The funeral of Beverley Randolph Jones who died on duty in East St. Louis rail yards last week was held at Christ Church Winchester with Rev. William D. Smith officiating. Elks lodges from East St. Louis Winchester and local relatives attended. burial followed at Mount Hebron Cemetery. The remains arrived at Cumberland Valley Railroad Station and were met by a Elks delegation and family. He was the youngest son of Beverley and Mrs. Jones of Winchester.
Commissioner Marble of the Interstate Commerce Commission arrived from Washington in Philadelphia to investigate anthracite coal companies and seek lower prices for consumers.
LAWRENCE Mass Nov 17 Three hundred textile mill firemen began a strike sending thirty thousand workers idle demanding an eight hour day instead of twelve. Strike breakers have been hired by the mill owners.
The Beiliss ritual murder case will be reopened by the government after new evidence allegedly vindicating Beiliss. The long controversial trial has drawn global interest since the acquittal. A lost bracelet on Main Street was also reported with a reward offered by the Star office.

Dispatches from Mexico report Americans in Victoria face danger as rebels cut the Mazatlan water supply and later seize Victoria. A State Department official offered no comment on the Mexican situation while reports of official retirements are denied. President Wilson also denied claims about Nelson O Shaughnessy.
Washington reports a bill introduced by Rep. Russell to change U S government pensions to monthly payments. The measure faces little opposition in Congress and could be adopted if both houses approve.
CALUMET Michigan November 17 Deputy Sheriff Barker and Jacob Trista a striker from the copper mines were shot and a number of other men were badly wounded in a clash between county authorities and strikers and strike breakers. The situation remains serious.
The cases of Taylor Hahn and Fred La Glaize and Cornelius Robinson, colored, linked to working horses and a mule unfit for service, were discussed in police court. Dr. L. Ms. Allen and Dr. E. W. Miller testified no improvement after ten days rest. Justice Peverley adjourned for ten more days. a sermon is planned in Kinderhook Sehdgl House on the third Sunday in December by Rev. Dorsey.

William Morgan, a well known farmer near Stephens City, received a black hand letter demanding $1000 cash by Friday else his house would burn and he would be harmed. The letter, signed by the Black Hand Society, prompted a Washington Post Office inquiry while Morgan stays vigilant. A separate note reports a meat house raid by Walter H. Boyd’s property three miles west of Stephens City, as six carloads of fat cattle were shipped to Baltimore markets last Saturday.
A million dollars in gold was stolen late last night or early today in transit from Constantinople to Paris on an express train. The funds were consigned by an Ottoman bank. An army of detectives is searching for the robbers.

Cambridge, November 17. John Lewis a 20 year old Cam bridge High School football player was killed today during a game against Martins Ferry High School. The tragedy stunned players and spectators as emergency crews attended to him on the field.
In rain and mud at Winchester Shenandoah Valley Academy defeated Washington County High School of Hagerstown 32 to 0. Worthington kicked off and WV A moved but could not break the line as the game opened with the score in the second quarter on a Marshall to Pate pass for six points with the extra point missed.
The November term of the Corporation Court opened at City Hall before Judge T. W. Harrison. Kepler Grim’s assault case against P. Hays of the city street department, fined $60 and jailed 60 days after a police court appeal, is scheduled for Wednesday November 26. A jury is expected unless the appeal is withdrawn.
A large marble stone over the grave of the late Mr. W. Taylor Jr. in Mount Hebron Cemetery was unveiled Sunday under Hickory Camp Woodmen of the World. Relatives and members attended. the exercises were led by S. B. Latham of Norfolk, state manager, who also spoke.
Mrs. D. F. Kerns of Frederick County displayed a sharp peaked gray and white waterfowl at The Star office. The bird is described as a stranger to the area and resembles the European coot in appearance.
The 17 day old infant of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reede died Friday from whooping cough at 573 North Market Street and was buried Saturday afternoon in Mount Hebron Cemetery. Rev. W. H. Carter of First Baptist Church officiated. Surviving are the parents two brothers and two sisters.
Peter Dinkle a longtime Winchester resident died at his home 645 West Cork Street after several weeks illness. Born in York County Pennsylvania he operated the Arlington Motel at Grafton West Virginia and was active in Grace Lutheran Church. He is survived by sisters Rebecca Dinkle nine Dinkle and Blanche Dinkle of this city and Lilian Dinkle of Charleston. Funeral services will be held at his home Wednesday afternoon with interment in Winchester Cemetery. Members of Gen Turner Camp Confederate Veterans will attend and the memorial will be read by the chaplain.
O L Jamison longtime superintendent of Metropolitan Insurance Company will be transferred to Hagerstown Maryland as district superintendent. He and wife, from prominent Frederick County families, regret leaving Winchester and their home though many friends will miss them.
Mr and Mrs B Ket recently returned from Ruge Summit where they summered and will spend the winter in Wisconsin where their daughter Miss Stein is attending school.
