The Star exposes early 20th century debates over Christian Science Mental treatment. Mrs Eddy and supporters are attacked for unproven cures and wealth from the movement. Critics urge reliance on common medicine and urge skepticism of new thought doctrines.
Delegates from Christ Episcopal Church Winchester attend the sixteenth annual meeting of the Virginia branch of the Woman's Auxiliary at Holy Trinity Church Richmond November 7 8. Miss Sallie Stuart will preside with Rev J J Gravatt and Rev R A Gibson among speakers.
Mrs. W. B. May of New York arrives at the Hotel Evans to view farms in Frederick County. She is joined by her son W. W. May and her brother H. P. Talcott. Several properties near Winchester have been inspected and she is pleased with the country and likely to settle here with her family.
The many friends of Dr. William McP Fuller of this city regret to learn he is ill and has been taken to Memorial Hospital where he underwent an operation. The operation was reported as a success and he is improving. He is the father of H. D. Fuller cashier of the Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Winchester.
Richard E. Byrd spoke in Berryville this afternoon at three in the courthouse urging re election of Hon James Hay to Congress. Full election returns will be announced from the Auditorium stage at Tom Moore's moving pictures Tuesday night. The Star wants ad readers to bring results.
At the Charley Rouss Fire Company meeting a committee was formed to organize the birthday anniversary of the late Charles Broadway Rouss to be held February 11 at the hall. A bazar and oyster supper were proposed for January or February. Captain Reed chaired the session with J H Henry as secretary. The Sarah Zane Fire Company met likewise and noted changes to parade plans, new stalls costing 35 dollars, a driver resignation, and four membership nominations.
Chief of Police S A Seabright received a circular from Major Richard Sylvester of the Metropolitan police in Washington DC seeking information on Preston H Lynn a fourteen year old who ran away from his Washington home on October 27 last A description notes a five foot seven or eight inch tall light complexioned boy with blue eyes and light hair wearing a black suit brown hat and white tie A boy matching the description was seen recently in the city and local police are investigating
The Valley Avenue Mission will hold preaching at the Sunday School House tomorrow at 3 PM with Rev. E. E. Northen to preach. A reorganizational school begins Sunday Nov 11 at 2 30 PM. Mr Angus MacDonald of Washington is visitors in the city.
In Winchester near silence as voters prepare for Tuesday election between James Hay and Dr. Fred E. Beecher. Polls open at sunrise. Friendship Engine House First Ward and City Hall Second Ward serve as voting places with judges and clerks named. Banks close for the day.
Robert Jeffers, a colored man living in Uniontown, was arrested on a warrant charging hunting on the Hackwood estate of Logan R. Fay on October 26. He appeared before Justice Luther Pannet, was fined five dollars and costs, and warned trespassers against hunting land without owner permission. Miss Belle Jobe of Stephens City was in town Tuesday night.
David Henry Brown a well known Strasburg meat merchant died Monday night at his residence after a month long illness. His son Albert M. Brown of Cooperstown N Y was summoned and cared for him at the end. He was born December 14 1842 in Frederick County and served in the Confederate service. He leaves a second wife Mollie Spengler and one surviving son. The funeral was held at Saint Pauls Lutheran Church with burial in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
A national railroad movement plans to sell local tickets at regular tariff rates usable for passage regardless of printed time limits. The change aims to save time and labor for ticket agents and travelers. Excursion tickets will retain their current time limits.
Rev. Dr. J. H. Lacy, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, to lead Sunday morning services in the courthouse at 11 o clock and preach Sunday night at Clearbrook Presbyterian Church in Clearbrook.
Cy MacDonald Washington baseball star met Winchester manager Sandy Baker to discuss charges of professionalism raised before the Washington board of education. The case cites pay received last summer and potential impact on his eligibility for Washington schools and colleges.
The 19 year old Miss Dora Billa Stottlemyer daughter of James W Stottlemyer formerly deputy sheriff was buried today at Mount Hebron Cemetery Winchester The funeral conducted by Rev T K Cromer Centenary Reformed Church was held after the remains arrived from Cumberland Valley Railroad with her father Funeral Directors Funk Son in charge of arrangements.
The will of the late Samuel Derks, a well known colored man, was admitted to probate in the city Clerk's office today. The document dated October 17th, 1906, leaves all property to his widow. The estate is valued at several hundred dollars. The Junior Aid Society of the Baptist Church will hold a bazar at Hardesty's Halt Berryville Virginia on November 1 2 and 28.
