The Opequon District High School in Middletown ends a successful term on May 21. Principal Austin Middleton led capable staff Bele Larrick Vista Dinges and Alice Rinker as students earned top marks. Emma E. Larrick won the gold medal for highest overall average, 95.23 percent, with Maude Matthews close behind at 94.52 percent. Grammar school prizes went to Florence Rogers and Willie Fry.
Benjamin F. Fawcett dies suddenly at 7 20 pm after heart disease complications at 122 South Market street. He lived in Winchester most of his life, aged 54, survived by wife Mary C Wisecarver and eight children, funeral Saturday at 3 pm at his residence with burial in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
The steel bridge over Opequon Creek on the Berryville turnpike is completed except for end fills. The Clarke Courier suggests a celebration when the bridge opens to travel, noting its construction and expected impact on road value and crossing high water.
Invitations go out for the Episcopal Female Institute commencement with Prof. William C. Marshall as principal. The baccalaureate sermon is at Christ Church on June 2 followed by graduation at the Auditorium on June 4. Diplomas will be awarded to graduates Hilda Miller Virginia, Grace Newman, Elsie Lee White Maryland, Nannie Lee White Virginia, Margaret Eastman Virginia, Nellie Fitz Pennsylvania, Virginia Lewis West Virginia, Amy Spurrier Virginia.
A series of ante nuptial events accompanies the June 1 marriage of Miss Virginia Cabell Baker of Winchester to Mr Peter Vredenburgh of New York. Theater parties in the Auditorium and a post theater supper hosted by Mrs Richard Evelyn Byrd highlight the pre nuptial week with Miss Page Aylett Royall Miss Edith Forsyth and Miss Frances Peyton Page among the participants.
Rev D H Kern pastor of Braddock Street Southern Methodist Church was inadvertently omitted from those who officiated at the funeral of the late John A Siber yesterday afternoon. He was assisted by Rev Dr J H Lacy and Rev Dr James R Graham of the Presbyterian Church.
Mayor Harry H. Baker returned from Roanoke Virginia after several days on business as the Palace of Pictures presents the new show Mrs Smithey and her boarding School promising local entertainment and a brief note on the city visit.
Special correspondent from The Star recounts Boston’s historic sites and early 1900s impressions aboard the S S Romanic en route from the Azores. He highlights Faneuil Hall, the old State House, the Boston Tea Party site, the Boston Massacre stones, King's Chapel, Granary Burying Ground, Christ Church, and Paul Revere’s lantern, then promises more observations from the journey.
About 150 to 200 members of the Fifteenth New Jersey Volunteer Veterans Association and many ladies arrived in Winchester on a special train from Newark. They toured Gettysburg Antietam and Cedar Creek, stayed at the Winchester Inn, and planned a return trip tomorrow. General Purner Ashby Camp will host an informal camp fire tonight with refreshments and a welcome address by Mr. R Gray Williams.
Fort Loudoun Seminary invites guests to a four day commencement from May 26 to 29. The baccalaureate will be May 26 in the Presbyterian Church by Rev. George Russell Hageman of New York City. Diplomat sermon May 28 by Rev. Dr. J. H. Lacy at the Auditorium. Graduates include Rebecca Howland Baird, Nancy Latimer Maynard, Katherine Virginia Royce, Mary Gladys Dinges, Marion Lee Spates, Agnes Nulston, and others from Winchester and surrounding areas.
Sunday School House hosts a Daisy Social on Braddock Street Friday May 24 at 8 p m. The program includes refreshments and admission is 10 cents to aid the carpet fund benefiting the church.
The sixty ninth annual Virginia Classis session of the Potomac Synod met in Centenary Church Windastas with most ministers and elders present. Rev A H Smith of Toms Brook was elected president with T Hamilton Davis as vice president and Rev Henry Dusler as secretary. Parochial reports summarized yearly church work and sparked discussion on minister salary and statistical reporting.
