Queen Victoria presents a son to King Alfonso and the Spanish people at one this morning. The royal infant Alfonso XIV is welcomed with twenty one gun salute and flags across Madrid. Queen Victoria and the child are reported well amid widespread joy.
At a meeting of the Farmers and Merchants' National Bank directors on Main street, Mr John J Ridgeway of Ridgeway Wa Va was elected a member of the board. Ridgeway is a prominent Berkeley County figure with strong experience in business and farming and is a large livestock dealer.
The Baltimore death notice for Col Richard P H Staub, 73, formerly of Shepherdstown, W V, recalls his Civil War service with Stonewall Jackson and Lee. Born March 18, 1834, he practiced law in Martinsburg and Baltimore, twice wounded and captured, then barred from Virginia after the war before resettling in Baltimore.
Winchester Acca Temple members joined the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of West Virginia for a long conclave in Martinsburg. The mystic caravan arrived after a desert journey to drink from Zem Zem and were hosted by Potentate Dr. J. W. McDonald. A late banquet at the Berkeley Hotel featured Thompson's Orchestra and extemporaneous oratory.
The engagement of Mrs Jeanette Overall Loving of Washington and Mr John Mathew Thompson of Berryville Virginia is announced. Mrs Loving is noted in Washington social circles and descendant of the Overall family. Mr Thompson is a traveling salesman, son of Capt John L Thompson. The wedding is set for June 19 at Mrs Loving's home.
Major Robert W. Hunter received from Mrs Enders Robinson of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities a badge and invitation to attend the Jamestown celebration on May 13. Major Hunter is among the few men living who attended the 1857 celebration.
Mrs Charles P Jack and her son James M Jack visit Berkeley Springs West Virginia for a brief stay. The note records their presence and domestic context.
The United States Circuit Court of Appeals reconvened in Richmond to hear the Miehle Printing Press and Manufacturing Company versus R Gray Williams trustee Eddy Press Company bankrupt and Shenandoah Valley National Bank and Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Winchester on petition for review. F W McReynolds argued for the petitioner and E Holmes Boyd for the respondents. case from District Court at Harrisonburg submitted.
Mrs F A Williamson and John Williamson of Mount Jackson are registered at the Hotel Evans in the city.
The sixth annual meeting of the Children’s Home Society of Virginia was held in Richmond at the society’s home on Grace Street. Rev. Dr. William J. Maybee remains superintendent, Major Holmes Conrad named to the board, and the group reports $5,241.01 in receipts for the year with $345.84 on hand.
Mr Harper Dovel of Front Royal Virginia, formerly proprietor of Hotel Jovans in Winchester, was among the injured in the recent Ohio River railroad wreck near Parkersburg West Virginia. He suffered bruises and shock but no broken bones. Railroad representatives have sought a settlement, but he was not able to discuss damages.
The Friendship Band performs its final spring concert tonight in front of the Court House. Director Prof. 3. W. Andrews is soon to leave the organization.
Attorney Richard E. Byrd, who has been in Alexandria on legal business, has gone to Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
Former Mississippi state senator C William Hines declares the country south of the Mason Dixon line is the negro’s only home and that they are not wanted in the North He based his view on two weeks in Boston trying to rent a home where his family would live and finding rents raised to high figures by local real estate men He concludes the North including Boston does not want the negro no matter outward friendliness.
Edward Lewis of Bunker Hill was arrested on a bastardy charge brought by a local woman. He was sent to Martinsburg jail, then released on $500 bond after appearing before Justice Thompson. The case caused a countywide sensation among known residents.
In Alexandria Circuit Court Judge L C Barley presiding the Winchester Memorial Hospital sued the Handley Board of Trustees. The plea was stricken and defendants were given ten days to answer. W Roy Stephenson and John M Johnson appeared for the complainants with R E Bryd for the board.
The Star provides daily price corrections from Winchester dealers with current figures. Wheat prices show a rate around 80 cents and corn at 3.00 dollars per bushel, reflecting local market values.
Harry H. Willis of Winchester elected second vice president of the Cumberland Valley Firemen's Association at Chambersburg Pa during the sixth annual convention. Martinsburg won the 1908 meeting, n delegates totaled 55 with Higgins and Richter reporting funds.
