John J Spangler Die in Missouri Confederate Army Veteran
Intelligence confirms the death of John J Spangler at Plattsburg Missouri on March 25 at age 72. Born in Frederick County Virginia on November 30 1830 he served with distinction in the Confederate Army and later farmed in Missouri leaving a widow two sons and a half sister. He was remembered as a refined citizen devoted husband and father and a lifelong Southern loyalist.

Work resumes on Shepherd College construction
The Shepherdstown Register reports resumed work on the Shepherd College building with stone cutters at work and materials arriving. Contracts awarded include cut-stone to S A Westenhaver for T J Orndorff of Winchester and red brick supply by Alex Henson of Shepherdstown. Buff press brick from Pennsylvania arrives. Hunter B Grimm of Winchester finishes stone work and will start brick work. Westenhaver also holds a contract for a new structure to be built by William T Stewart in Martinsburg.

Runaway Horse Dragged Local Man Through Main Street
Daniel Mellwee, a truck gardener near Ly Lopton’s farm, was dragged for yards along Main Street when his horse ran away after a shaft broke. Though bruised and shaken, Mellwee escaped serious injury as bystanders screamed and the horse dashed toward Clifford Street before being captured three miles from town.

Man Nearly Attacked by Catamount Fells It in Flight
