Old Man Killed In Struggle Near Gerardstown

Martinsburg West Virginia March 8 80 year old William Laraway Berkeley county resident north of Gerardstown was shot and killed during a scuffle with his housekeeper Plotner a colored woman. The pistol discharged during the struggle entering his left breast and he died shortly after. Justice McLeod of Gerardstown opened an investigation but no arrest had been made.

Shepherdstown Vote Upholds Prohibition Theme

In Shepherdstown West Virginia a Saturday local option election produced a 105 to 144 tally in favor of the dry ticket with 39 votes separating the sides. Temperance advocates led by Rev Ed J Richardson of the Anti-Saloon League of Virginia and Bristol orator Robert EB Clay campaigned with strong support from colored voters.

Mrs. Juliet A. McCaw went to Charles Town West Virginia Saturday morning to see her half sister Mrs Ann Pleasants Hopkins who is ill with rheumatism of the heart. She could not visit the sick room due to the patient condition. A message from Rev Dr Abner C Hopkins said Mrs Hopkins spent a comfortable night and showed marked improvement.

A Winchester AP correspondent filed a wireless telegram Saturday from the Western Union office. The message went to Washington via Western Union, picked up by the United States Wireless Co, and routed to Baltimore where it appeared in the afternoon papers. It reported the snow storm prevailing in the Valley.
