Capp, a large fruit grower in the Strasburg area, found all San Jose scale dead in his orchards and none active, puzzling him. He suggests the dryness of last fall or valley smoke from forest fires may have halted the insects’ activity.
A comic musical titled A Race for a Widow arrives in town from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and will be shown at the Auditorium tonight with curtain at 8 30. The production has good recommendations and promises light entertainment.
President Charles JB Clevenger has called the annual meeting of the Frederick County Fruit Growers Association for Saturday next March 23 at 2 o'clock in the Court House Hall. All members are requested to attend as business of importance to fruit growers will be transacted.
Mrs Couchman hosted a Thursday dinner at her North Maple avenue home in Martinsburg West Virginia in honor of the recently married Mr and Mrs C F Bell. The bride received many handsome presents from guests including Mr and Mrs Mason of Winchester Mrs G C Wyndham of Tiffin Ohio Mrs C Wyndham Mrs A C Bell Mr Leon Bell and Mrs Lyle and daughter.

The J. R. Lupton Drug Company a leading Harrisonburg Va concern has been sold to Jacob W Williamson and C B Williamson who assume management today Jacob W Williamson formerly resided in Winchester served as a prescription clerk for Franck Baker Son He had returned to Harrisonburg and led the Lupton store since then Fred Willis formerly of this city but now in Harrisonburg will join the Williamson firm.

Mrs. Strachan Barret of Mobile Alabama, guest of Dr and Mrs Robert McC Glass, departed this morning for Mobile after visiting here. She attended the Washington inauguration ceremonies and was previously known as Miss Colleen Hughes who spent much time in the city years ago.

In Nashville on March 8 the Coopers and Sharp neared the close of their murder trial over ex-Senator Carmack. Key issues include who fired first and why the Coopers were on Seventh Avenue as Carmack traveled to his apartments. Witness Mrs Eastman testified Carmack fell from the gunshot before drawing his revolver. Additional testimony from Col Cooper and Robin Cooper argues Carmack fired first. The week is expected to conclude the trial.
The Star reveals that Lena Barrett daughter of Mr and Mrs John Barrett of near Nain married Roland L Buncutter of the same locality. The secret wedding occurred about a month ago to keep friends guessing. Buncutter works at the cooperage of John Thwaite near Albin and comes from an old northern county family.

Martinsburg West Virginia March 8 80 year old William Laraway Berkeley county resident north of Gerardstown was shot and killed during a scuffle with his housekeeper Plotner a colored woman. The pistol discharged during the struggle entering his left breast and he died shortly after. Justice McLeod of Gerardstown opened an investigation but no arrest had been made.
In Shepherdstown West Virginia a Saturday local option election produced a 105 to 144 tally in favor of the dry ticket with 39 votes separating the sides. Temperance advocates led by Rev Ed J Richardson of the Anti-Saloon League of Virginia and Bristol orator Robert EB Clay campaigned with strong support from colored voters.
Superintendent J B Spurrier of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad travels to Richmond with other officials to appear before the Virginia Corporation Commission regarding conditions on the Valley Railroad between Harrisonburg and Lexington. Officials seek improved station facilities and overall service along the division.
Mrs. Juliet A. McCaw went to Charles Town West Virginia Saturday morning to see her half sister Mrs Ann Pleasants Hopkins who is ill with rheumatism of the heart. She could not visit the sick room due to the patient condition. A message from Rev Dr Abner C Hopkins said Mrs Hopkins spent a comfortable night and showed marked improvement.
Cecil Robert Grabill of New Market and Miss Evelyn B. Phillips of Winchester were married in Washington on Saturday afternoon. Rev. W. H. Ballangee officiated. The bride, a popular millinery shop operator in New Market, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Phillips. The groom comes from a well to do New Market family and has built a successful business career.
Miss Florence Rutherford returns home to Locust Grove after visiting Woodstock Virginia where she attended a Marsanutten Academy stay and heard the Jefferson and Poe literary societies debate Friday night.

The common council special committee recommended approving a license from Commissioner of Revenue J E Correll to William Lawrence Huff for a moving picture theater in the Faulkner building on South Main near the bridge. Huff plans to fit the south side storeroom for the business. uncertainty remains about start date and possible north-side bowling venture.
A Winchester AP correspondent filed a wireless telegram Saturday from the Western Union office. The message went to Washington via Western Union, picked up by the United States Wireless Co, and routed to Baltimore where it appeared in the afternoon papers. It reported the snow storm prevailing in the Valley.
A special meeting of the Friendship Wire Co is scheduled for Tuesday evening March 9 at a stated time. Captain H B Grimm announces the session will cover business of importance and directs attendance.
Mr Joseph W Leafe former manager of the Lewis Jones Knitting Company mill has taken a position as traveling salesman for Leadbetter Drug Company of Alexandria Va He began his first trip Saturday through the Shenandoah Valley now based in Portsmouth Va prior to the move.
Mrs A R Blankner widow of Frederick Blankner once of this city is ill with pneumonia at her Baltimore home. Winchester friends regret her illness and wish her a speedy recovery.
