Fatal Wreck on Cumberland Valley Near Hagerstown
A head on collision between two Cumberland Valley freight trains near Maugansville four miles north of Hagerstown Md killed engineman Ralph B P Baxter and injured several crewmen. The heavy eastbound train No 96 and westbound extra No 87 collided at speed of about 80 to 85 miles per hour. Baxter was crushed in the cab and scalded by steam. crews assisted in the rescue as wrecking parties arrived. Investigations will determine operator responsibility at Mason and Dixon as crews readied a report.
