Miss Maude Eckardt of Front Royal Virginia maid of honor at Miss Elizabeth Gearing and Mr Garrett Spiker wedding escaped injury when a B & O train wreck near Bluefield twenty June 12th killed engineer and fireman thirteen injured thirteen others. Her trunk and wedding dress sank but arrived intact for the ceremony. She camped near the wreck site with companions for over thirteen hours before reaching Winchester.
Hon Hal D Flood presided at VMI Lexington Va commencements praising the school and delivering guidance to graduates. Cadet George M Nicholls won the first Jackson Hope medal and Cadet Murray F Kirkwood the second. Gen Scott Shipp retires after 58 years with the institute. R E Byrd Jr of Winchester attended events and had been a former cadet.
Confederate veterans from General Turner Ashby Camp attended a reunion in Richmond Virginia. They praised the attention and courtesy shown in the capital with special thanks to E L Williams of the Virginia Medical College for his hospitality and care. Many veterans said this visit may be their last to Richmond.

Mrs E M Tidball of Winchester has been chosen as matron of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind to succeed Mrs May who recently resigned. Tidball will assume duties about August 1 after visiting friends in Staunton. She is described as a woman of great capacity and energy.
Winchester tops the Richmond Browns at Reservoir Park in a 14 to 0 shutout. Six runs in the second inning and seven in the third powered Winchester as Duggan connected for a long homer over center field, the longest drive of the season.
Winchester business leaders sought Sunday passenger service but both the Baltimore and Ohio and Cumberland Valley railroads refused. Thomas Fitzgerald the B and O general manager said Sunday service is not justified beyond occasional excursions. M C Kennedy of Cumberland Valley cited barely profitable weekday trains and opposed adding Sunday trains.
An order from the Postoffice Department boosts salaries beginning July 1 for Winchester clerks and rural free delivery carriers. Clarence Hardy and B F Potts rise to 1000 dollars, Harry G Stouffer to 800, and Harry Hillis to 700. Rural carriers with routes of 24 miles plus increase from 750 to 900, but no new carrier added.
A large party of young people gathered at Rouss Spring for a moonlight picnic hosted by Misses Bertha and Lillian Dick at 18 North Kent street. They enjoyed ice cold drinks and a night view of the pumping station, with a long list of attendees including Eva Carper Sophie Carper Mary Pierce Mamie Russell Edith Sanford and many others along with numerous escorts.
A Census Bureau volume on Wealth Debt and Taxation notes Virginia real estate values rise sharply from 1900 to 1904. It records Virginia total true property value at 1 287 979 180 with 52 661 769 exempt, Winchester realty growing to 3 205 853 in 1904 from 3 036 041 in 1900, and Frederick county values 6 145 524 total with taxed true value 5 827 479 and assessed 3 116 299.
Mr and Mrs Alexander Barrie hosted a lawn supper at their Northwestern Turnpike cottage five miles from town in honor of Miss Leila Moss McGuire whose wedding to Mr Lewis H Hyde of New York is planned for tomorrow. Guests included Miss Laura McGuire and many McGuire relatives along with friends from New York and nearby towns.

The Virginia department of public instruction sends outlines of four year courses to superintendents and summer school conductors, inviting criticism. One July summer session will be held in Winchester. The program spans four years: a primary grade and three grammar grades.

The Frederick district Epworth League adjourned its two day meeting in Frederick after selecting Winchester as next year’s host city. The district covers Maryland Virginia West Virginia and part of Pennsylvania with about 35 leagues and 2000 members. New officers include President Lee M Bender Martinsburg W Virginia and secretary Bessie Day Clark Martinsburg W Va others serve as vice presidents and treasurer. Reverend M F B Rice was chosen as advisory board chair. Julia Forney and May Capher attended from Market Street Church.
Shenandoah Valley National Bank President H H Hansbrough attends the Virginia Bankers Association annual meeting at the Jamestown Exposition. President Harry St George Tucker delivers the welcome address as committees prepare reports and officers face elections. The event runs at the Inside Inn with a banquet tonight.
Miss Rebecca Barr daughter of Mr and Mrs Oscar Barr of North Bradford Street leaped from a buggy when the horse bolted and sustained a severe arm injury carried in a sling. Friends report injuries not dangerous and she is expected to recover shortly.
