The Washington Post reports Senator Martin of Virginia is campaigning vigorously, meeting delegations on war department issues and preparing further speeches. Observers say he conducts a dignified, strong campaign, avoiding personal attacks on rival Montagné as both candidates vie for the Democratic nomination.
Miss Johanna Swisher returned to Romney West Virginia after visiting Mrs D H Scanlon in Berryville. F B Whiting spent yesterday in Laray on legal business. Lehner visited Front Royal on business with Mr and Mrs. Drake. W Bane of Shepherdstown and H F Drake of Waynesboro visited Staunton relatives.
Miss Blanche Pile daughter of Mr and Mrs George C Pile of Bristol Virginia and formerly of Winchester will marry J Walter Wright president of the Bank of Mountain City on July 19 in Bristol. Mrs A P Jack has gone to Berkeley Springs for several days.
A roll lists pupils across grades from sixth to eighth and primary departments. Names include Cheheed bean nations, Heather man, Stewart O'Rear, Wm. Ebert, Alva Richards, and many others with teachers Sartelle and Arnold noted. The list covers junior, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades with multiple spellings and OCR quirks.
Monday city treasurer Geo H Kinzel placed a want ad in The Star offering a binder for sale. Yesterday afternoon John Oates of Hampshire County bought the binder from Kinzel. Rev Julien Broaddus and Chareb Clarke are noted in the text.
Mayor Harry H. Baker James B. Russell and Winchester gentlemen will travel to Chambersburg Pa to attend the funeral of Thomas B. Kennedy president of the Cumberland Valley Railroad Services to be held at his residence at 6 30 pm He will be assisted by Rev Dr John Grier Hibben Rev Dr J Agnew Crawford and Rev Ray H Carter Trains on the Cumberland Valley will stop at 6 30 pm two minutes silence to honor Kennedy and the Cumberland Valley shops in Chambersburg close at noon Thursday until after the funeral
Friends and colleagues in Washington learn that Mr. M. Collins, longtime Raleigh Hotel room clerk, has been appointed chief clerk of the Schenley in Pittsburg. A Winchester native, he departs today for his new post amid broad good wishes from Washington and across the country.
Four youths patrolling the area below Rouss Spring found a bundle of a woman's clothes including a silk skirt underskirt and underwear. The garments bore no identifying marks and investigators seek clues to the owner.
Mrs Anna Armstrong widow of William Armstrong died Sunday in Martinsburg at age 74. She leaves three daughters. Miss Bertha Manford of Martinsburg died Monday and is survived by her mother two sisters and three brothers.
Mr and Mrs Gardner Willard Brown arrive in London and stay at the Carlton Hotel following their recent marriage in Winchester. Mrs Brown is formerly Miss Mary Russell.
Mr W E McCardell of Hagerstown was in Winchester on the 2nd for an undisclosed visit.
A telegraph company worker, son of a Dr, was killed in a severe thunderstorm near Talbotton Georgia when lightning struck the wires. The man suffered extensive injuries with limbs torn and body mangled before deaths were reported in Atlanta. Burial plans are underway as the family mourns.
Pedestrians near Braddock and Piccadilly streets believed work on Handley Library had begun. In fact workers were cleaning the lot for a yard party by the U. B. Church. Supt. Shull promised an arc light for the lot center.
The Portner Brewing Co of Alexandria begins an active local campaign promising good returns due to its established reputation. Since establishing a city branch, Portner's beer malt and soft drinks are popular, with T. J. Fuqua named as local agent.
A marriage license was issued this morning in the county clerk’s office to Bradley W. Baker a young farmer of Hampshire County West Va and Willie B. Haycock daughter of the late O M Haycock of near Clearbrook in this county.
The party including W. B. Littleton and Leslie Littleton along with W. Kent Miller and Edward F. Shaffer drove 172 miles to Woodstock Virginia. They left Hagerstown at 10 30 Saturday night and returned home Sunday at 11 p m according to the Hagerstown Globe.
Mr. Rafus Robinson and Miss Lucy Young of near Summit Point West Virginia return to Winchester after a freshwater watermelon event at Sprint's.
Charles Weil of Richmond a stock broker with Weil and Helstein died Monday morning at his home 101 West Clay Street. Born in Alsace Lorraine sixty three years ago, he served in the Civil War with the Sixteenth Mississippi Regiment. He leaves a wife and five children. Funeral held at his residence at 5 30 yesterday afternoon.
Governor Joseph EB Willard drew about 1000 attendees at the Lynchburg Academy of Music on Thursday night. The plain practical address impressed many friends who said the speech would boost his standing in Lynchburg. A hundred citizens from Amherst Bedford Appomattox and Lynchburg sat on stage. The crowd included many young men showing strong support for Willard.
Stephen Maloney son of R. J. Maloney road foreman of the Cumberland Valley Railroad drowned in Horst's dam north of Chambersburg Pennsylvania while swimming with companions about 11 o clock Monday morning. Friends in Winchester express sympathy for the bereaved family.
In Promentevil Virginia at the bride's home on Blue Ridge Avenue, Martha Evelyn Sowers wed Robert Carter Hall at 9 oclock in the presence of close friends due to the recent death of the bride’s aunt Nettie Turner. The couple plans a wedding tour and will reside on Blue Ridge Avenue after returning.
Robert L. Striker of Winchester married Pearl Diffenderfer of Boyce in White Post with Rev Strickler officiating. The groom, now based in Berryville, is a former Winchester resident. the bride is a popular Clarke County young woman. They will reside in Berryville.
The body of Miss Virginia Marshall Downer who drowned in the Potomac near Alexandria was buried in Norfolk yesterday. The funeral was conducted by Rev. B. D. Tucker and Rev. St. George Tucker and attended by many of her young friends. Fourteen young men acted as pallbearers.
The market page lists wholesale prices for wheat at 90 cents per bushel rye 60 cents corn 2.55 dollars per bushel butter 120 eggs 14 cents per dozen old hens 10 old roast sec turkeys 12 cents. Engineer N Wilson Davis of the Winchester and Washington Electric Railway Company visited town today.
At a special city council meeting Winchester and Washington Electric Railway Company won the franchise to light the city streets for 16 years at a set annual fee. The Winchester Gas and Electric street lighting contract expired, and the council approved annexation of expanded districts and a $572.36 county debt share.
Aden Keller was killed yesterday afternoon in a severe storm near Toms Brook Shenandoah county while in his brother Noah Keller s harvest field. A. R. Keller’s son, he taught in local public schools and leaves five brothers and four sisters.
Rev. Carlton D. Harris and his family left Martinsburg for Baltimore after his appointment at the conference meeting. Harris served four years as pastor of Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church in Martinsburg, during which membership grew significantly. Friends regret their departure.
