Wheaton defeated Winchester 7 4 as Shiner faltered early but steadied for Wheaton. Winchester rallied with three runs in the fifth before Wheaton added another in the sixth. Captain Baker played superbly at short while umpire Cummings impressed with fair judgment.
Stewart Jacobs of Washington faced arrest at his aunt Mrs. Lucy Barrett’s home on South Main Street after a day in custody. Detective Burlingame said a hearing would likely be held today as details emerged about Jacobs diverting a few dollars from the Bay State Sedan Company to cover medical bills and household expenses amid family illness.
Otho Nathaniel Hillyard was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the March 29 killing of Isaac B. Ritter at Mrs. Carlisle’s home near Winchester. The jury, led by foreman B West Baker, sentenced Hillyard to six months in jail and a $25 fine after prosecutor John M Steck urged second degree.
Mrs James W Seabright visiting sister Mrs Mary Massie on South Market street returned to Baltimore today.
Mr and Mrs Gardner W Brown and Mr and Mrs James B Russell share congratulations for the arrival of a daughter at the Russell home in New York. The newborn is reported to be progressing satisfactorily and the Browns plan to visit Winchester later this summer.
The trial of John Curry for the murder of Aunt Sophie Taper at Stephens City has been moved to the October term before Judge Thomas W. Harrison. Curry remains jailed. Sophie died from axe injuries after a beating skull fracture, and Curry, her nephew, was arrested amid reports he was under liquor influence.
Miss Nora Davidson of Washington visits sister Mrs. David Wingerter. Mrs. Lucy Gray returns home after a pleasant visit to her brother Mr. John Thwaite.
Mrs Albert C Brown is visiting friends in Baltimore Maryland and Washington District of Columbia during a family trip.
The Senatorial Executive Committee certified results from the June 15 1907 Democratic primary in Frederick Shenandoah and Winchester. Robt M Ward led in Frederick and Winchester while Frank S Tavenner led Shenandoah, with Ward named the party nominee for the Virginia State Senate in the Tenth District.
Postmaster Kern receives order from the Postoffice Department to weigh all mail at the local office for six months starting June 1. Previously the office kept weighings for at most thirty days. The six month record aims to handle holiday mail flow by classifying and weighing all mail to keep the staff busy.
The Friendship Cornet Band resumes its plaza festival with tonight's open air concert and plans continued performances as long as the festival lasts. Proceeds fund new supplies and the group will present concerts throughout the summer for public enjoyment.
Traveling freight agent W W Ruth of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad is stopping at Hotel Evens. The brief social item notes his visit and lodging.
Mr and Mrs F M Thompson of Clarke county Va return from the Jamestown Exposition. Their daughter Miss Ethel Thompson joins them with Emma Jones and Thomas Jones as other relatives visit Berryville. Ethel Thompson was a guest of The Evening Star for winning a subscription contest. Thompson reports rough Chesapeake Bay voyage and notes the exposition as a success with extensive exhibits from many states, daily demonstrations, and a large Smithsonian display.
