A severe late Sunday storm swept Winchester and the Virginia Valley causing widespread damage. Wind toppled hundreds of trees and knocked down many wires disrupting electricity and telephone service while street lamps were dark until nine. Rail lines were undamaged and schedules continued as linemen began repairs. Continued on page 4.

Major Eli H. Janney Dies at 80 in Alexandria
Major Eli H. Janney inventor of the automatic coupler for railroad cars died in Alexandria after a nearly two year illness. A Loudoun County native and Confederate veteran he rose to field quartermaster under Gen. Robert E. Lee. Survived by three children, his death marks a milestone in railroad technology.

Dr William S Turner Dies At 35 After Overwork
Dr William S Turner son of the late Rev Robert Turner died at his brother George Turner's home near Stephens City after a life of devoted medical service. He built large practices in St Louis and Pittsburgh before returning home, leaving a widow and no children. Funeral set for Tuesday with a Green Hill sermon at Stephens City.

Excursionists Safe as Storm Hits Washington Route
The Baltimore and Ohio excursionists spent yesterday in Washington and Baltimore and were not caught in the violent storm that swept Columbia and Maryland after leaving the Virginia Valley. Most travelers were in Union Station as the storm raged. the building suffered no damage despite broken glass. Tickets sold totaled 163 at the origin and 316 passengers were aboard when the train reached Harpers Ferry.
