Death of Daniel W. Brown noted with a brief obituary. Born April 10, 1819 near Stephens City, he served as a member of the Military Council organized by Federal authorities in 1866 and later as a city magistrate. He helped authorize the Winchester and Potomac Railroad franchise and ran the Union Hotel. Survived by a wife Margaret J. Cooper, two sons, a daughter, two brothers, twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral at United Brethren Church Saturday at 3 pm with Mount Hebron Cemetery interment.

Billy Blue Dies From Consumption in Winchester
William C. Blue a well known colored man of Winchester died at 11 30 this morning at his home on west Clifford street after a lingering illness of consumption. He was 35, born in Leesburg Virginia and leaves a mother. More than a year ago Blue was arrested for selling liquor on Sunday without a license, found guilty and sentenced to six months in jail. While serving his term it was found he was slowly dying and he was released before completion.

Drunken brawl leaves Hopkins badly cut near Shenandoah
Charles Hopkins was slashed twenty nine times and Wade Tinsman beaten in a drunken fight at John D. Bell’s farm on the Shenandoah riverbank. Hopkins is in precarious condition with doubtful recovery. Tinsman has a dozen wounds but is expected to recover. Bell reports a party of ten to twelve men sought shelter from rain, violent clashes ensued, and no arrests have yet been made.
