Sillman Fined for Stamps Theft in Stonebridge Post Office

Thomas J. Sillman former post master at Stonebridge Clarke county was fined 90.91 and costs for stealing stamps from his office after pleading guilty. Evidence showed ed stamps valued at that amount were used to buy merchandise and alcohol for personal use. Witnesses included W L Fultz and others. Sillman was removed from office last December. Separate case continued involved Beavers Dant McFarland and Morris charged with breaking into and stealing 95.85 from the Clearbrook post office and other articles. Morris was previously arrested in West Virginia and brought to Winchester for trial.

Winchester Merchants End Early Closing Movement

Practically all leading Winchester merchants inaugurated the early closing movement last evening. Stores closed promptly at 6 o'clock and will continue to close at that hour until early fall except Saturday nights.

Funeral Services for Miss Catherine E. Hoose

The body of Miss Catherine E. Hoose who died in Hagerstown Md after a blood poison illness was brought to Winchester and buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery Coontz lot. Rev Dr J H Lacy conducted graveside rites. Miss Hoose born in Germany 64 years ago spent most of life in the United States. One brother John Hoose of Tilivots. She lived with Capt Charles Coontz’s family at Millwood Clarke county for years then with her daughter Mrs Emma V Baker in Hagerstown.

Building Ordinance Approved by Common Council

The Common Council met at City Hall to pass ordinances and review finances. Reports showed receipts of $9,213.29 and a cash balance of $3,194.85 after expenditures. water and sewer assessments were discussed and two sewer beds considered for winter operation.

Girl in Maryland Tries Suicide Over Love

Roberta Bartroff of Glen Echo Maryland attempted suicide with a revolver in a woods near her home after writing a note to her mother and confessing love for Howard Higbee. She fired at her heart but missed, then hidden in brush before collapsing. Sister Minnie led a pursuit and found the scene. The 16 year old lay on a cot in Georgetown Hospital awaiting possible complications.

Hancock county reports a fugitive Claude McKusker, accused of murder, remains at large in the Tonoloway Hill area. Sheriff Barber leads a 35 mile manhunt with local riders and deputies while residents stockpile ammunition and await a reward. McKusker’s father urged surrender but he refuses, prompting posters reading I will not be taken alive and I want to kill Rhoades.

Circus in Town Draws Crowds for Memorial Celebration

Howe's Circus, with its London style memorial feel, opened to large crowds. The program featured animal acts including "Morocco" the camel and a two week old noncuba calf, plus a half hour band concert and a full evening show starting at 8. Doors opened an hour early for tours of the menagerie and seating.
