Miss Maude Spaide of Main Street was struck by a Riley car while walking from church. Riley and passengers lifted her to a house. Dr Powell found no broken bones, only bruises and a nervous shock. Spaide recovered and Riley expressed regret, exonerated by witnesses and the injured party.

A pleasant surprise party was given Saturday afternoon at the cottage near Opequon county for Mr. and Mrs. Graham Baker. Winchester friends attended including Mrs. J. W. Taylor and daughter Miss Minnie Taylor and several other named guests.
The Common Council informs property owners of weekly garbage pickup days. Do not place garbage in alleys or lanes. place curbside. Schedule lists wards and days: Wednesdays south of Water and east Main, Tuesdays south of Water and west Main, Mondays north of Water and east Main, Saturdays north of Water and west Main. Mr Jonathan Branson, an aged prominent Quaker farmer, fought for his life Saturday when his longtime shepherd dog attacked him after killing a turkey. Branson, seven miles north of Winchester, defended himself with a hoe and killed the dog, sustaining minor injuries.
Manager Connie Mack informed the team that pitcher Lefty Russell was sold to Atlanta for under 10000 dollars. Russell began pro ball in 1941 and had arm strain limiting his output, though Mack believed he might recover. He was known for a win over Winchester while with the Hagerstown team.
Miss Lucille Faulkner of Middletown is visiting in this city, staying for a time with local acquaintances and taking in nearby sights.
A fire alarm was raised at about 11 o clock this morning at the Sarah Zane engine house. The entire department responded quickly and found a large Baker and Company motor truck causing a small plume of smoke in the street.

After two and a half hours, a Wytheville jury finds Claude Swanson Allen guilty of killing Judge Thornton L. Massie. They urge a fifteen year sentence. Sentence suspended to allow testimony in other cases. Four indictments remain that could still yield first degree murder convictions. State plans the murder trial of Sheriff Lewis Webb next. defense objections to this move will be ruled when court resumes July 1.
