Farm Notes on beetles chickens and cabbage protection
A rustic farming note discusses potato beetles feeding on wheat and advises against crossing Rhode Island Beds with White Leghorns. It mentions stray, wandering strawberry plants and an old hen story about a cemented foot but continued laying. The New York Experiment Station reports cabbage beds screened with cheesecloth to shield roots from maggots, using 12 inch frames. Weather in the East favors potato beetle growth, signaling a likely late crop and the value of late-season screening to protect seeds for next year.
