An 1847 1848 era account recalls Henry Clay’s overnight stay in Winchester Virginia during a Whig tribute. The entry describes crowds greeting the famed statesman, Clay’s gracious conduct, and the warm personal moment when he included two young girls in the welcome, epitomizing his public image.
Miss Mary McCarty eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs James McCarty of south Braddock street married A F Bloom a young Altoona businessman in Lancaster last Thursday. The ceremony was at six in the Methodist parsonage followed by a reception at T M Winters home. They will reside in Lancaster and she will visit Winchester next month.
The article explains Ground Hog Day on February 2 with the mid winter seer predicting the next six weeks. A sunny day means six weeks of bad weather if the shadow appears, while a dark day means six weeks of good weather.
Rev. Dr. J. P. Hyde preached at Centenary Reformed Church in the pastor’s absence yesterday morning. The sermon titled The Execution of the Thief on the Cross drew praise today for its illustration of the penitent thief’s prayer and the dying Christ’s response.
Mr. Hunter B. Grim, the contractor handling stone and arch work at the State Normal School in Shepherdstown, W. Va., is home for several weeks. About 1,200 perch of stone has been laid with 200 perch more to finish the foundation. brick laying is not expected to start until March.
The Auditorium Orchestra will provide music at the Hobson lecture next Thursday night for a charitable cause. The ensemble will not charge for its services.
James Thomas, a colored youth, who stole Mr. Jacob Baker's horse last week, will be given a hearing before Justice Kator tomorrow afternoon. Mr. Harry L. Kurts of Tar Evarna Sra, composing force, is slowly recovering from pneumonia. The marriage of Miss Ethel Fulton Kenney of Baltimore and Robert L. Rust of Front Royal, Virginia, took place in Baltimore Thursday.
The Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Society held its first 1902 meeting at Clarke County home of President Chamblin. Directors listed include McCann Hiett Baker and Purcell with Chiles and Hollis, plus visitors. A dinner followed, praising Chamblin’s popular leadership and fair success.
Mr. R. E. Byrd will deliver an address to Clarke County citizens on the Constitutional Convention at the Berryville Court House at two o clock in the afternoon on Saturday February 1 1902.
Superintendent W. White awarded three scholars with bound books for perfect attendance at the Presbyterian Sunday School. Miss Mary Moling won first prize for not missing a Sunday in three years, joined by Leo Woodward and Chris Fuller as recipients.
Twenty two Baptist Sunday School scholars who attended every session for three months received pocket editions of the new testament as prizes. The gifts were donated by Mr. E. W. Church.
In memory of Jerry 8 Snyder who died in Keedysville Maryland last week a memorial service was conducted by the Young People's Society at the United Brethren Church. Snyder a former society president aided church work while his family lived in Winchester. Miss May Rawlings of Silcott Loudoun county visits Miss Lizzie Striker on East Clifford Street.
In a Strasburg News letter Mr. C W Heater urges a State Veterinarian Surgeon as stock raisers need facts about a mysterious disease. He cites a Frederick County outbreak tested by the U S Department of Agriculture confirming hydrophobia in a cattle sample, referenced by The Star and Dr. G W Larrick.
Rev N W Tracy Kentucky lecturer and evangelist arrived from Harrisonburg to Chester. He will hold a preliminary lecture Thursday night at Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church inviting the public. The discussion explains regulations for a temperance lecture series at The Auditorium. Tracy comes to Winchester at the invitation of the ministerial association with a stereoscopic machine for illustrated features.
Judge Thomas W. Harrison, in town from the Constitutional Convention, stated that he believes the Constitution will be submitted to the people for ratification.
Elmer Bentley holds a rare original copy of the Ulster County Gazette dated January 4, 1800. The issue features a graphic burial account of George Washington and stands as a valued relic from the dawn of American printing.
Mr. Isaac Weinberg of Fredgtick Maryland visits the city.
Local readers report a dog overrun in Winchester with no enforceable dog laws until May 1, 1902. Officials note the Chief of Police must list all dogs by May 1, then the Treasurer identifies untaxed dogs by May 15 for capture.
