Real dealers report speculation driving a sharp break in wheat prices with unsettled quotes. Local receipts paid 1.03 per bushel, a penny higher than Friday, while butter and eggs held steady as markets in Winchester showed no change.
The funeral for John M Davis occurred at three o clock yesterday from his South Market Street home. Rev Chas D Bulla of Braddock Street Methodist Episcopal Church South officiated. Interment followed at Mount Hebron Cemetery with pallbearers Henry Schneider Edward Copenhaver James M Haymaker Samuel McCarty George Haymake and George Wypple.
Berryville authorities arrested Berryville Batens of The 5M Church street Fe Marshall Williams and Howard Rigie white and others today on a warrant sworn by John R. Castleman keeper of the tollgate. The case, brought before Justice E B Hardesty, was dismissed for insufficient evidence. Costs of 4.40 paid by the turnpike company.
The STAR reports a funeral tribute to the late Mr. Charles A. Evans, closely identified with Tax Franchises and industry. An account of the funeral will be published tomorrow. Mr. Evans’s memory is honored in a brief observance this afternoon. Major Joel Flood of Appomattox County has departed after weeks at Mrs. R. Ey Byrd’s home.
Winchester will add a three story brick building opposite the Shenandoah Valley National Bank with three store rooms on the ground floor. The Ginger Sewing Machine Company has leased one store, with space for flats above including two units with baths, gas, plumbing, and hot and cold water.
Mr John F Kerfoot a prominent farmer of Stone Bridge Clarke county died yesterday at his home from brights disease His death was unexpected He was 40 and survived by his widow and one brother David Kerfoot The funeral will be from Jo sacs Clamberi anl verba with Rev Mr Shepard officiating and burial in Front Royal He was well known in Winchester.
South End Hose Company members in uniform attended a ten day bazar at Friendship Fire Company hall. Saturday night raised 96 dollars, with expenses to be paid and a surplus to be turned into the treasury. A banquet will honor the ladies who aided the bazar.
Mrs. Nettie R. Ryan of North Washington Street announced the death of her son’s father in law, Mr Frank Flynn, aged 62. The funeral is to be held today in Manhall, Va, with Flynn recognized as a well known carriage manufacturer in Washington.
Valuable 185 acre farm known as the Peter Hammen Farm located 2 miles from Winchester is up for sale. Attorney 34 M. M. Lirzom represents the sale with details available through legal channels.
Winchester Lodge No 767 Renev os and Protective Order of Elks adopted resolutions for their late brother Charles A Evans at a funeral service. They praised his integrity charity and friendship and pledged sympathy to his grieving family with the resolutions to be engraved and published.
Joseph F. E. Steele died at his home near Vaucluse Virginia on Sunday morning aged 78. He is survived by his wife two sons Luther Steele of Winchester and E W Steele and two daughters Ruth and Rose Steele. Funeral at Ridings Chapel near Tulip at 8 p m conducted by Rev W R Berry with interment at the church graveyard. Pallbearers named R B Beaty John W Cowgill John B Headley J M Grim Samuel T White J W Cadwallader.
Mr. Philip Sheaff, an aged citizen of Nineveh, fell while inspecting a thermometer last week and broke his collar bone. His condition since the accident has been serious.
The Star reports a meeting of J. E. B. Stuart Katies Confederate Veterans on Church Street with Berryville Ave. A committee to prepare for Mosby Camp arrival was named: A. Moore Jr., Dr. McCormick, R. O. Beaumore, and Moors Jr. The gathering closed with a vote in the Tam Stax contest.
Rev. Charles T. Weede preached to the Winchester Lodge Knights of Pythias at Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church. The service drew a large Pythian audience and orchestra music highlighted the address built on Damon and Pythias. The three lessons were Friendship Charity and Benevolence with charity emphasized.
Oia Taylor, a Black man formerly sentenced to the chain gang for striking Wash Smith’s daughter, was recaptured Saturday by Officer McIntosh. He was found in town at Shug Evans and placed under arrest, fined $4 by Justice Hodgeon, paid, and discharged.
The quarterly United Brethren Church conference met with Rev. W. F. Grover presiding. Reports showed the church in good condition. D. L. Wyndham was elected delegate and E. L. Fries the alternate for the annual conference in Martinsburg on March 16.

On Wednesday evening Miss Attis Miller was riding home from Nineveh when her horse suddenly fell throwing her to the ground. Her right arm was fractured between the wrist and elbow. She is resting comfortably and her arm is improving.

Mrs Ida Miller learns her father William T Noll died in Martinsburg on Saturday from pneumonia. Born October 3 1832 on Apple Pie Ridge Berkeley county he served with Confederate cavalry in the Civil War. Survived by six children including E Willis Clarence Henry Allen B Noll and daughters Ida Miller and Ella Noll.
A Berryville petition signed by Governor Montague frees 13 year old Roy Breachdial who was arrested last fall for breaking into a house near Swimley. He previously faced a year in jail and years in the house of correction and is sent home to Pennsylvania with new clothes.
A Virginia widow Mrs J T Birmingham died of blood poisoning in Lutay while her sister Mrs Robert Large died in Port Lance Ohio at the same hour. Birmingham had lived in Canterbury until a year ago and was known locally.
