Sheriff Purcell spoke at the Farmers Institute praising Frederick County for its soil water climate and people. He cited limestone and slate soils, blue grass influence, and Cedar Creek as factors shaping agriculture and civilization in the region.
A sizable audience heard Rev. Dr. J. Wm. Jones speak on The Boys in Gray at The Auditorium. The Confederate veteran and chaplain told vivid stories of camp life and valor, noting many former soldiers serve in public roles now. Net receipts were about $100 for General Turner Ashby Camp.
Winchester Lodge No. 65 invites members to assemble Thursday at 8 o clock. Grand Outer Guard Henry Schneider, recently elected by the Grand Lodge of Virginia, will visit for his first local appearance since the election.
Mr. M. F. Yeakley will hold a public sale of personal property at his farm near the Northwestern Grade about four miles from Winchester. The sale takes place Tuesday morning March 8 and includes a head of horses and eight head of cattle among the items to be disposed of.
A blaze at Summit Point Jefferson County West Virginia destroyed the dwelling and store owned by merchant C. W. Locke. Discovered at 10 30 p m it spread quickly forcing the Locke family to flee in their night clothes. Losses total about 2000 with 500 to 600 in the building and partly insured. The fire was brought under control and neighbors assisted the family.
Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent in Catholic and Episcopal churches here. Forty days of fasting and prayer will follow before Easter with daily or twice weekly services and special sermons. Catholics twenty one and older must fast except exemptions apply for the sick, nursing mothers, and others deemed unable to fast.
Mr. Chas. T. Brumback and Miss Daisy Hie wed at 5 this morning in Lebanon Church Shenandoah county. The groom is connected with Snapp Brumback agricultural dealers of Stephens City. The bride is daughter of Nebraska Hite of Lebanon. They depart for a wedding journey and will live in Stephens City.
The remains of Mrs. Walter B. Henry, who died Monday evening after a lingering illness, were buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery. Funeral services were held at 4 o clock at her East Monmouth Street home, led by Rev. B. D. Skelton of the United Brethren Church. Pallbearers were C. E. Hoover, Geo. W. Grimm, George W. Kremer, Stewart Grimm, and Lewis Legg.
Judge Atkinson released ex mayor David E. Edmondson from jail on $500 bail after he sought bail following a county magistrate hearing. Others arrested in the Middletown arson case remain jailed or released on recognizance as the grand jury prepares to convene Monday.
Centenary Reformed Church ladies closed the Faulkner building oyster supper at Main and Water streets. Running since February 17, the event faced bad weather but yielded about 128 dollars gross and at least 75 dollars net for church funds as Lent began.
Marriage notice announces Miss Ella Eaton of Frederick County to Mr. A B Berg of Abercrombie North Dakota. The ceremony occurred Tuesday February 17. Miss Eaton resided in Winchester for years and is sister to Mrs. William Copenhaver. Admission details follow a separate item.
Walter Randolph a nine year old colored youth living with his grandmother on south Braddock street was taken into custody by Officer C E Neville and jailed for suspected arson. Earlier witnesses saw him flee an alley carrying an oil can as a brush pile near a stable burned. Authorities expect him to be sent to the Reformed School as an incorrigible.
An informal reception was held at Dr. Wm. P. McGuire’s residence on Amherst street in honor of Hon. Harry St. George Tucker and his bride Miss Martha Sharpe of Wilkesbarre Pa who married recently at Atlantic City. The receiving party included Dr. and Mrs. McGuire and several Tucker family members. The couple departed on the 11 44 train for Lexington to make their home.
Mrs. Maggie Riley, daughter of Mrs. Thomas Dusty of this county, died at her Portland Maine home on Sunday February 22 She leaves a husband and three small children She married in 1895 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in this city and lived in Portland since Her sister Miss Mary Dusty was with her during her final illness.
Miss Julia Taylor of the Tidball farm west of town receives from New York a fine Great Dane praised as one of the finest seen locally.
The final day of the Farmers Institute in Frederick County and Winchester drew a large audience at the Auditorium. Sessions opened at 10:30 with a one hour noon recess and reconvened for an afternoon adjournment toward the annual meeting in 1904. The program featured many ladies in attendance and notable speakers including Sheriff Clark H. Purcell and a list of Farm and homemaking talks by local figures.
City Clerk Richard L. Gray and family returned from Berryville where his brother Warner T. Gray of Clarke county remains ill with severe kidney trouble. Warner is a former Confederate soldier in Rosser's Brigade and was reported improving after a critical period.
The House Committee on the Chesapeake and its Tributaries reported against the bill yesterday. The sponsor is the representative from Frederick County. The record mentions oyster industry topics and named individuals including Mrs. Alice Pryor and Nettie Manning in a garbled list of related items.
