Reverend Samuel Cline, a missing Virginia preacher, returned home after a month on the road and a trek of over a hundred miles. He collapsed on his farm last night or this morning and lies in critical condition as doctors struggle to rouse him.
The Home Building and Loan Association of this city paid an extra dividend of 1.05 per share to stockholders. Payout completed June 7, with the balance of profits represented by the declared extra dividend. Stock maturity is 200 per share, and payments are at Hansborough & Carter on North Main Street. The ordinary payout period was seven years, but wise handling allowed full payout in 64 years, plus the extra dividend.
On next Sunday evening Rev. W. H. H. Joyce will begin a series of revival services at the Braddock Street M. E. Church South.
The School Board will hold its regular monthly session at 7 39 tonight in the City Clerk Richard L Grey’s office on Rousse Avenue.
Mr. P. C. Parrish, long affiliated with Dr. R. W. Stone's drug store, plans to move to Sathfield West Virginia to work in his brother's retail operation.
Mr. 8. B. Campbell formerly of this county now of Columbus Ohio visits his old home. He is accompanied by Mr. A. L. Mourry.
Mr Ashly G Swanson the new auctioneer cried his first sale on Saturday afternoon. It was the sale of some household goods belonging to Polk J.
Easter spoons are showcased at E. Bruce Capper's the Jeweler located on West Water Street near 219 West Water. The display highlights seasonal silverware suitable for holiday meals and gifts.
A boiler crack at Winchester Gas and Electric Light Company left the city without arc or incandescent lighting for several nights. Officials report no lights tonight as repairs continue. Gas service also dimmed, causing street scenes of wandering pedestrians and lanterns amid collisions and humor at the blackout.
Mrs. J B Almond died at her husband’s residence on Main street Luray after a long illness. She was sister to Charles L Pritchard of Front Royal and R L Pritchard of Luray. She leaves a husband and three young children. The Almonds lived in Winchester previously and moved to Luray about two years ago where Mr Almond worked in real estate loans insurance.
Pat Rollins of Chambersburg will play ball with the Decatur Club, one of eight teams in the Iowa Indiana and Illinois League. Rollins previously played for the Winchester baseball team.
A Senate bill to appropriate 5000 for restoring and preserving General Daniel Morgan’s grave at Mount Hebron Cemetery was reported favorably and may pass Congress soon under war department supervision. If not this session, it tops House agenda next session. originally 25000 for a monument was proposed.
D B Eskey, an employee of C M H Goetz the lightning rod dealer, swore out a warrant after a salary dispute. Goetz appeared before Justice Bragonier and was released on his own recognizance. A civil suit for money due is also listed and Eskey reportedly urged a bareknuckle fight to settle the matter.
Mrs Wilkes of Washington attended the funeral service for the late Mrs Ellen M Cartmell with services noted in additional location entries inside the newspaper pages.
Superintendent David S. Glaize of Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Society supervises a probe into a last Friday night event at the Fair Grounds held without permission. He reports a gate lock was broken and targets several spectators for testimony as authorities seek the culprits.
The play Old Maids Made Over in Stephens City Saturday night drew strong applause. The town shows excellent local talent and hosts social entertainments more often than nearby Winchester.
Mrs. Rose Striker of Martinsburg is visiting this city, staying for a time as an out of town guest. She is engaging in local activities and tours during her visit.
Mrs. Mary L. Householder, born April 4 1831, died at 3:30 am at her son in law Edgar L Hook's Bethel Church residence after pneumonia. Funeral Wednesday at Bethel Church with Rev J E Raymond officiating. Survived by three children S H Faulkner Annie Whitacre and the late Edgar L Cook, second husband Aquilla Householder, a brother Tros B Brown and sister Mrs Sarah Adams. Mrs Adams and Mrs Householder were twins notable for their likeness.
Mrs Hannah Hinkins widow of George L Hinkins died at her Middletown home after a long illness aged 86 She was born Miss Marter Shenandoah County Virginia and leaves six daughters two sons and a nephew Funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal Church South Middletown with Rev Dr A M Cackley officiating Pallbearers included J W Rhodas J B Ridings E C Ridings A F Saum B F Greenwalt and J W Larrick
Funeral services for the late Mrs Ellen Cartmell were held at 3 o clock this afternoon from the Taylor House parlors. Interment followed at Mt Hebron with Rev Nelson P Dame of Christ Episcopal Church officiating, assisted by Rev Drs Jas R Graham and H M White. Pallbearers named were Mesure J B Russell B C Shull I W Russell Col W W Glass Dr P W Boyd and Wm M Atkinson.
Albert S Worthington reports a letter from his brother Dr N J Worthington in Johannesburg dated January 18. He notes unreliable mails, disrupted railways, and no clear war end in sight for 1900. Civilians endure martial law, weekly food rations, and neutral status amid British and Boer conflict.
