Wheat reached 184 in Chicago and 1.03 in Winchester, the highest local price in years. The surge raises flour costs and may push bread prices higher, with bakers likely to adjust if flour stays elevated. Analysts cite speculation, war fears, and a tight crop as drivers of the rally.
Delegates from Luray returned to Winchester with Gibbens credited for 37 votes on the State Executive Committee. Warren county pledged support misread. A. T. Holtzman considered but withdrew. A. C. Brown named as alternate, not a National Convention delegate. Convention adjourned after hours without nominating a Congressman, to reconvene in Front Royal on August 30.
Within sixty days Winchester will see two new large clothing stores open. Mr A Lyons has leased the Evans Building on North Main Street and will run a retail sales room with a tailoring shop upstairs. He also plans an agents furnishing goods establishment. J P Haddox will open another large clothing store in his new building with a reportedly massive stock of clothing.

Rev W I McKenney presiding elder of Frederick District in the Baltimore Conference will preach at 8 tonight in Winchester Market Street Church. This sermon marks his final appearance as presiding elder before retirement after six years. The fourth quarterly conference follows.

Hon M J Grove of Frederick county Maryland owner of the Grove Lime works at Stephens City near Winchester recently observed his eightieth birthday. An affectionate reception was held in his honor.
In the Police Court Henry Cave James Cave and Albert Cline were acquitted of complicity in the theft of 144 bottles of liquor from a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad warehouse. Harry McKinney and Jacob Hook were held for the grand jury with Hook confessing and accusing McKenney of stealing the liquor while Hook stood outside.
Major Holmes Conrad special counsel for the government delivered the closing address in the conspiracy to defraud the government case against Machen and others. Justice Pritchard will deliver the jury charge tomorrow before the jury retires for a verdict expected Friday.
Circuit Clerk T V Leach reports Supt Bolling of the Virginia penitentiary says Sam Harris under sentence for assault cannot be received there as the penitentiary is quarantined against Warren county. No infectious disease exists in the county. A separate item notes a marriage planned at the bride’s home tonight between H Henry and Migs Flora Henry.
H. E. Smith bought from T. A. Byers in Franklin County a six month old Durham bull calf weighing 650 pounds for W. W. McDonald. The Berryville Fire Department will attend the Friendship gear in Winchester tonight and has donated a handsome lamp to the bazar.
County Clerk T K Cartmell issued a marriage license this afternoon to W Sam Cook and Mary Lineburg, both of Stephens City. The groom is son of Thomas Cook, native of England, and the bride is daughter of W M Lineburg. They plan to move to Pennsylvania to start a business near Pittsburgh.
Dispatches report four Japanese battleships and two cruisers sunk at Port Arthur during an attack. The Siberian Railroad is now guarded by Russian troops and Viceroy Alexieff may retire soon. Reports from St. Petersburg and Wei-Hai-Wei corroborate the losses and shifting war conditions.
Monday evening Edward Snapp visited Oliver Snapp’s mill for grinding. His horse bolted and ran about half a mile before stopping with minor damage. Ernest Funkhouser’s mare was injured and is unavailable. Wesley Funkhouser visited his brother D. Funkhouser. Wheat prices reached a dollar, prompting farmers to monitor market reports.
Mt Hebron church schedules sermons Sunday at 11 a.m. and 7 30 p.m led by Rev Mr Magruder. Audrey Kerns, formerly seriously ill with pneumonia, is convalescing. Mrs J A Potts remains ill at home. Lula Cooper plans to return to Winchester soon after visiting her parents.
Mrs. Frank Headley of Baltimore arrived in the city yesterday to visit her parents Captain and Mrs. Geo. W. Kurtz on Main Street. Her husband suffered heavy losses in the Baltimore fire as head of the Headley Chocolate Company plant destroyed. Hon. R. E. Byrd plans to leave tonight for Mount Jackson for several days of business.
The eleventh annual Farmers Institute of Frederick County meets in Winchester from tomorrow, February 25, through Friday the 26, with music, welcomes by Judge Atkinson, and sessions on farm labor, rural mail delivery, cold storage, and fruit culture led by Prof. Fulton and Prof. Heiges.
Mrs George W Haines of south Main Street received word that her aunt Mrs Matilda Heff Gray died in Baltimore on Sunday at 62. The funeral was held today at 11 o clock from the deceased’s Baltimore residence at 925 McCulloh Street.
The Star states the recent attempted assault victim did not live on National Avenue. The girl escaped during the incident and her identity remains unknown, dispelling rumors that she resided on that street.
Miss Mary Kurtz has been seriously ill with grip and nervousness for several days at her home at Braddock and Cork streets. She is now somewhat improved. Rev. R Ashland White of Gerrardstown West Virginia visits his brother W Spott White in the city.
Mrs. Daisy Cain Williams sues in the Circuit Court for divorce from Harry Russell Williams on grounds of desertion. They wed five years ago. he served in Company A, Beyond Virginia Regiment during the Spanish American War and has returned infrequently to Winchester. The suit notes a prior shooting incident linked to alleged cruelty, involving Williams and a man named Ikey Thomas, with Williams' brother-in-law Eddie Cain later involved. Cain served three years and was pardoned after half term.
The Presbyterian Church of this city holds a Day of Prayer for Schools tonight during the regular Wednesday service led by Rev. Julian 8. Sibley. The event supports colleges schools and educational institutions and invites the public to attend.
The funeral of James Kellman who died of consumption was held at 1 30 pm from the United Brethren Church in Red Bud. The procession formed at his Fairmont avenue home at 1 pm and proceeded to Red Bud for interment. Rev. E D Skelton officiated. Kellman was an ex Confederate soldier who served in Captain Jack Adams' company.
The condition of Mr. O. A. Evans worsened today with pleurisy and a persistent 102 degree temperature. Dr. W. A. Bell regards him as very ill.
A marriage license was issued to Mr. J. A. Pitcock and Miss Lillian G. Peery, both of the county. Miss Peery was the adopted daughter of Mr. Joseph Peery. The couple were married this afternoon at the parson Rev. N. N. Ball.
Imported Palms and Lillies for ad. Miller Supply Co. Miss Bessie W. Conrad left this morning for Norfolk Virginia to visit her sister Mrs H HL Little.
Arthur D. Himilright and Maggie Funkhouser of Middletown sought a license in Winchester after age consent concerns. Clerk Cartmell required a parental oath, prompting a phone consent from Middletown. The couple married at Centenary Reformed Church with Rev. T. K. Cromer and caught the noon train home, departing after a three hour absence.
Last night the Friendship Fire Company hosted a lodge night and oyster supper with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and Madison Lodge No 6 Independent Order of Odd Fellows in attendance. Oyster shortages due to severe weather reduced receipts and left many visitors unsupplied. tonight will be quiet with no organizations scheduled, while tomorrow resumes with a rush crowd as the Berryville Fire Department joins.
The bank reports assets now exceed 51 245 000.00. Mr. H E Munday of Shepherdstown West Virginia visited yesterday on business.
