Manager Sandy Baker has signed most players for the coming summer. Practice starts June 1 with a June 6 opener on Confederate Memorial Day. The lineup includes Dick Woodward, Jackie Shiner, Feiser, Cantwell, Pat Parish, Sandy Baker, Buster Brown, Ed Dugar and others from Washington, Georgetown, and nearby colleges. Right field remains to be filled.
The Frederick County Teachers Association will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Courthouse Hall next Saturday. Mr. Dickens discussion will be led by R Gray Williams on Dickens life and works. A Question Box will continue and Miss Kemp will collect dues from arrears.
Berryville will gain a hospital and sanitarium within a month to be fully equipped with modern appliances. Dr Alfred B Tucker has rented the old Smith property at Main and Buck Marsh Streets for remodeling into a hospital. Patients from New York City and the region are expected to seek admission by April 1.
Star southpaw Red Porter, long a Staunton standout, has drawn several high salary offers from prominent clubs including Holyoke Mass league Baltimore Eastern League and a bid to pitch in the American League. Porter and his wife Mrs Edward Brown are visiting relatives in Staunton at 4 Market Street.
Braddock Street MITE Church announces three Sunday services including Decision Day at 9 45 a.m. Baptisms and church membership at 11 a.m. Revival at 7 30 p.m. with special music at all services.
Notices show multiple sales by trustees and executors in Virginia areas including Front Royal Berryville and Stephenson. Items include stock personal property farming implements household goods and real estate with dates in February and March 1907 and locations near Court House Be and Winchester.
A committee led by Judge Thomas W. Harrison inspect Winchester jail and find it unsanitary dilapidated and inadequate for prisoners. They will report to Judge Harrison at the March circuit term and may recommend hiring an architect to decide remodeling or rebuilding or replacing the jail.
Guests at the Winchester Lodge social session praised the crowd of attractive women, with a meat supper led by Caterer John T Neenan and music by an orchestra directed by L R Swimleys. about two hundred attended. A separate report notes a fatal train strike near Winchester injuring a man identified as John M Steck. Local residents Mrs B H Gruver and Miss Bertha Gruver visited, while Hartzell of Baltimore and Seabury Davies also appeared in town for brief travels and social visits.
Woodstock scene as Deputy Sheriff Bowersett and Sheriff Spiker secure fifty taleam en to travel to Culpeper for the Strother murder trial. Twenty five to thirty men already secured from Woodstock and Shenandoah County include merchants and officials. jury expected to be seated Monday morning.
Miss Harriet Myers daughter of farmer David Myers died at her home near Stephenson's Depot after about two weeks with diphtheria. She was about 24 years old and her brother Frederick Myers also died of the disease weeks earlier. The family had not contracted it recently. The remains were brought to Winchester and interred in Mount Hebron.
The engagement of Miss Mary Picton Stevens daughter of the late John Stevens of Castle Point Hoboken N J and Mr Ogden H Hammond of New York is announced for a Monday April eight ceremony at Trinity Church Hoboken followed by a reception at Castle Point the Stevens family home on the Hudson.
Snow is expected late today and Sunday in Virginia. Mr. C Marshall Baldwin of Norfolk returns from New York on business to spend Sunday with his father, Dr Cornelius Baldwin.
News from Winchester reports Dr J Yardley Brown died at his Pennsylvania home aged about 70. He was a former Frederick County farmer, dentist by training, served in the Union Army and was active in Republican politics and the Farmers Alliance. Survivors include a widow and two daughters Jennie and Lillie. He moved to Pennsylvania two years ago after farming near Kernstown.
