Last night the northern half of the city plunged into darkness as freezing rain created treacherous ice. Residents faced perilous travel while ice and water formed slick streets, and electric lights were cut after a telephone wire damaged the line. The outage was caused by the wire, not the electric company.
Owing to foul weather and dangerous walking the annual sermon to the Knights of Pythias by Rev. C T Weede at Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church was postponed to next Sunday night. Few attendees were present and were dismissed.
Late Saturday afternoon Mrs. Anna M. Sloat widow of Alexander Sloat fell at her West Water Street home and fractured her left arm between elbow and wrist. Dr. P. W. Boyd attended and reduced the fracture. She remains in considerable pain but is doing as well as could be expected.
The Star reports on the financial security of customers as pressman Hart Harry Ritter of Tux Sran addresses concerns about safeguarding funds and maintaining trust in the publication’s handling of money and accounts.
The Peter Hamman Farm occupied 186 acres located two miles from Winchester as recorded by M. M. Lewos in August.
Winchester Lodge No 867 Elks passes a resolution thanking the ladies who organized the bazar and the fire companies and Odd Fellows for support. The resolution praises donor contributions and orders publication in city papers and copies to donors.
The Presbyterian Church Sunday School plans a birthday party next Thursday night from 7 to 10 with a musical program and free refreshments. Guests receive invitations with a verse asking them to enclose pennies equal to their age, and to bring seed-thoughts for youthful minds.
Reported in the community is the illness of Mr. James, known as Dusty among friends, a popular young man with many close associates and mournful supporters awaiting his condition.

Berryville Bureau reports the Board of County Supervisors votes 3 to 2 to reconsider alms-house keeper Peter Fuqua’s case after a tense session. A prior 2 to 2 tie blocked replacement votes. the Prosecuting Attorney cast or refused decisive votes in tie cases. The matter moves to Circuit Court for final action.
Leonard Copenhaver, an employee of The Sax office, slipped in darkness last night, sustaining a deep facial cut and a sprained leg. He received first aid at the scene and was later likely treated for injuries.
Local residents at Lake Wisa discuss social topics at the village store during the past week. The debate on card playing ends with a caution that keeping children safe and avoiding church gossip will prevent harm.
The Virginia Annual Conference of the United Brethren Church meets in Martinsburg starting Wednesday March 16 for three or four days at the United Brethren Church on Pennsylvania Avenue. About one hundred ministers and delegates are expected to attend. Mrs F J Russell is convalescent after a ten day grip. Vote early in Tam Sraz contest.
Bettie Putman dies of pneumonia aged around 50 in Front Royal Virginia at 9 AM. Survived by five brothers and two sisters all residents of Front Royal. Funeral service by Rev White of the Methodist Church at 8 PM tonight. Robert Jackson returns from Washington after son Mark Hanna's funeral.
Students at Shenandoah Valley Academy enjoy a half holiday honoring Elm Slie Knox of Richmond Virginia, a popular younger student whose birthday coincides with the birth date of the Father of his Country.
The list for the week ending February 20, 1904 shows unclaimed letters for J. L Broun, J. H. B. Fitzpatrick, Julia Hebb, Fannie Randall, John E. Seward. Persons calling for letters must pay one cent for each letter received. Bentixy Kuen, P. M.
J P Siler formerly of Winchester who runs a restaurant in Williamsport Maryland has leased the National Hotel in Williamsport and will take possession when proprietor Frits vacates around April or May.
A group of Winchester Republicans will travel to Luray Virginia for the district convention tomorrow. Delegates include A. Brown H. S. Lupton Hunter N. Kern C. W. Rameburg Harry R. Kern O M Gibbens. Affairs include choosing a State Executive committee member, a post now held by Gibbens.
The fourth quarterly conference of Winchester charge United Brethren Church will convene at the United Brethren Church next Saturday at 10 a.m. Rev. W. F. Graver of Martinsburg presiding elder will lead. Sunday night at 7:30 Grover will preach and assist in administering the Lord's Supper. Other services include Sunday School at 2:30 p.m. and Y P C U at 6:45 p.m.
The Ireland's Own Band, sixty prize winning musicians from Ireland, will perform at the World's Fair. The organization has won every first prize offered in Ireland since 1885 and is praised for high class tone, intonation, execution, ensemble, and instrument quality. Every member is said to be a teetotaler.
The Star editor Daniel B. Conrad is confined to his Water street home with a grip, likely out for a few days though not seriously ill. Emma Bush hosted a Stephens City gathering Thursday night with many guests including Ida Sonner Hilda Williams Emma Parker Nettie Carbaugh Nellie Venable Florence Guard and several men enjoying games and late refreshments.
Rev. J. D. Donovan of the United Brethren Church in Martinsburg West Virginia is in improved condition but remains confined to his home. A concert tonight will feature a comfortable seat, ample heat and light, and colonial costumes with proceeds to the Hospital. tickets are 10 cents and every dime goes to charity.
Mrs. Weede, wife of Rev. OC T. Weede, pastor of Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church, suffered a serious injury after slipping on ice at Market and Cork streets last night. She sustained a three cornered cut, a broken arm, and a dislocated elbow. she was treated at the scene and later rest at the parsonage.
Mrs Bettie Waddle White died at her Capon Springs West Virginia home after a long illness at age 55. Survived by brothers John Waddle of New York and Julius Waddle of Romney and sister Lilly Cook of Pittsburgh. A niece of Mrs Samuel Mullen of Winchester attended the funeral with relatives.
A frozen water pipe burst in the lavatory of Rours engine house flooding the second story. Water poured into the main auditorium and ballroom, risking damage to floor and ceiling. Mrs. John Snyder, visiting here, returned to Baltimore Saturday.
