A burglar smashed a plate glass window at R. H. Shearer’s store on Baltimore Street Cumberland and stole three Colt revolvers worth about $50. The breakage caused about $100 damage to the ten foot tall pane. Mr. Shearer is brother of A. L. Shearer of Winchester.
Winchester Aerie No. 824 will hold memorial day exercises on the first Sunday in May with Hon Charles T Bland of Portsmouth Va expected to be the orator.
The young child of Mr and Mrs Harry McCabe died at six o clock this morning at its home on north Market street. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon with Bishop George H Messenger officiating.

In Throne Revel Virginia on February 21 engineers and a fireman were seriously burned in yesterday's wreck. They were moved to Strasburg Hospital for treatment. The rear coach suffered heavy damage while the baggage and first passenger car were badly damaged. Edward Mitchell reports serious internal injuries. P M Stump of Alexandria is in town. Mrs J W Trenary's condition has improved. A Farmers Institute is planned for Front Royal on February 28 with an interesting programme.
Mrs Annie Pugh wife of Bigar Pugh lived on the Northwestern Grade near Parishville and died last night after a three year illness caused by measles. She leaves a husband and two young children. funeral to be held at Christian Church on Timber Ridge. She was a daughter of John Oates of near Highview.
Rev. J. Mills of Anneville Pennsylvania, bishop of the United Brethren Church, will preside over the Virginia Conference session in Day ton next month and will visit Winchester to preach at the United Brethren Church on Monday evening March 20.
The Ministerial Association of the Reformed Church in the Valley of Virginia met in Harrisonburg yesterday. Officers include Rev. N. H. Skyles of Woodstock as president and Rev. M. A. Kieffer of Timberville as secretary. Rev. T. K. Cromer of this city did not attend. The next meeting is set for Mount Crawford on the second Monday in March.
The Connecticut Association of Classical and High School Teachers labels fraternities in high schools a growing evil. Miss Eva Taylor, formerly from this city and now in Stamford, Conn., is a member of the association.
Circuit Clerk Cartmell issues a marriage license to Briscoe L. Snapp son of John W. Snapp of Fawcett's Gap and Bertie Lee Branner daughter of George Branner of Relief.
Mr. A. Lyons, manager of the Lyons Clothing Company, returned last night from Baltimore where he had been in the hospital for about six weeks.
A complete counterfeiting outfit was found in a cell at the location. Police report details remain sparse as investigators secure the scene and question witnesses.
The Star reports Berryville likely loses the Winchester and Washington Electric Railway route via Berryville to Ashby’s Gap and Washington. A committee favors the Ashby Gap path, due to river power disputes and high river-right prices. Engineering surveys from Winchester to Boyce and Berry’s Ferry will begin when weather allows.
The Virginia Classis of the Reformed Church will hold a special session at Martinsburg next Friday to consider the dismissal of Rev. Dr. T. J. Hacker from Lehigh Classis to this one. Dr. Hacker has accepted a call to Roanoke Virginia to succeed Rev. Ellis Hay who went to Hanover Pennsylvania. Dr. Hacker is now at Allentown Pennsylvania and is regarded as one of the ablest men in that church. Rev. T. K. Cromer of Winchester will attend the meeting.
Mr William Keating and wife were summoned to Woodstock due to the critical condition of Mrs William Hite sister of Mrs Keating. Mrs Hite suffered paralysis last Sunday.
Virgil Weber 21, a B and O brakeman, was crushed to death Sunday in Cumberland. M M Dean 24, another brakeman, was mangled Sunday at Rowlesburg West Virginia. Peter W Ambrose, a well known B and O engineman, died Sunday in Martinsburg.
Jennie Ragland a 14 year old girl daughter of J C Ragland of Vivian was torn to pieces by hungry hogs in a pen. She fell headlong into the hog trough and was killed before help could reach her.
Mr. Lee Barr has purchased the laundry on south Main Street formerly conducted by Mr. Robert Barr.
The will of J Samuel McCue, hanged in Charlottesville February 10 for the murder of his wife, Fan ny Crawford McCue, was admitted to probate. Four of McCue's six brothers act as executors with bond of 100000 dollars and guardians for his four children. The document leaves the estate to the four children and appoints guardians and trustees, with provision for Ruby's care and a monument fund. Appraisers named include A Pendleton Bibb James H Lindsay Branch E Jeffries Rupert A Watson and G F Cunningham.
Mr C L Hawkins of Lamps in this county reported a miraculous event at his home. He keeps about one hundred hens but had not received an egg from any since November. One hen laid an egg last Saturday and the bird is hailed for her heroism with likely reward from Mr Hawkins.
Announcement that Marchist E L Orndorff and C P McVicar will purchase Bailey & Boxwell at 179 N Main St and continue a general grocery and fresh meat business. They solicit continued patronage and promise the best service and accommodation to the public.
Entertainment at the Auditorium last night by the Royal Arcanum pleased a large, appreciative audience. Performers Mr. Chas E Douglass Miss Irene West Prof C J Fell and Miss Josephine Fell delivered clever acts.
Potentate Charles H. Phillips of Acca Temple Richmond received a handsome jewel Friday from Governor Montague on behalf of the Shriners of Virginia. The Winchester nobles were among those present at the presentation.
Clarke residents note the Boyce family of Col. Uriel L. Boyce leaving their Clarke county home “The Tulleries.” The exiled veteran Confederate fighter plans to settle near Wilmington, Delaware, with his son Truxton Boyce, while brothers Uriel and Lonnie prepare to depart. The Tulleries property shifts to Blandy, Pennsylvania, as restoration begins. Colonel Boyce, a Kentucky native, once fought John Brown and was wounded in the wrist.
The Virginia Conference of the United Brethren church will meet in Dayton at the new church, starting Wednesday March 22, for three to four days. Rev. H D Skelton, pastor, will attend barring illness. he has led the Winchester church for eight years and may be renewed for a ninth. Delegate from this charge is Mr Warren Keller.
One of those injured yesterday in the Southern wreck near Front Royal was Mr. C. M. Chiles of Strasburg, a cousin of Mr. CS. M. Chiles, treasurer of Frederick County. Mr. Chiles suffered a leg injury in what is his second railroad accident.
Messrs. Charles P. McVicar and E. Lee Orndorff arranged to buy Bailey & Boxwell's business at 179 North Main Street and will operate the store after that date.
Mr. J. W. Hubbard state lecturer for Virginia Royal Arch Masons left today for Richmond. He has been lecturing the companions of John Dove Chapter R A M and will return in March.
Rev. R. A. White pastor of Gerardstown Presbyterian Church and brother of W. S. White declined a call to Middleboro.
Mr B West Baker of Albin notes this winter brings the worst weather for sheep he has seen though none died for him. He reports other sheep raisers suffer losses and birds have frozen or starved. six birds remain alive with feeding. He urges a law to prevent hunting game birds for several years to avert extermination and future scarcity.
Mr and Mrs J Erb hosted a charming party Tuesday evening in honor of sister Miss Nelly Sowers. Despite breezy roads guests attended and enjoyed a repast, dancing, games, and chats. The decorated table showcased evergreen and roses, reflecting the hosts hospitality.
Fred Easton serving five years for murder of Lorenzo Kline sent his wife a neatly wrapped package containing his gray mustache with a note he hoped she would keep to remember him. She cursed him and threw the hair into the fire.
The Winchester Directory Company sues over a new phone and business directory printed by The Star. The complete neatly bound book will be ready for distribution Thursday from the bindery. It features 16% print clarity and is expected to be valuable to the public.
Mr. John W. Frick of Inwood visited Dr. Hunter H. McGuire today to treat a right eye injury caused recently by a corn shuck.
John F. Martin of New York City regained sight after fourteen years through the aid of Miss Churchill. He reports severe experiments, torments, and electric treatments prior to his recovery, now reading ordinary type and working in a bookbindery without aids.
Mr L Hoover has gone to New Market to attend the funeral of his cousin and his wife's uncle Samuel R Hoover who died at his home Sunday. He was paralyzed last Wednesday. He was 57 years old and leaves a widow and two sons Claude N Hoover cashier of the Citizens Bank of New Market and Benj Hoover attorney at law of Elkins WV. Mr Hoover was a farmer on a large scale and president of the Citizens Bank and prominent in the Lutheran Church.
The local post office observes the holiday with one delivery and collection at 10 a.m. and window service from 8 10 to 8 40 p m. General delivery opens 11 to 12 m and 1 to 2 p m. No rural delivery.
