William J Smith longtime Gravel Springs Lutheran pastor died at 66 after paralysis struck at his home in Broom Frederick County He served the Gravel Springs Bethel St Johns St James Fremont churches traveling about 400 miles monthly to minister to his congregations Born in Boonsboro Md he served in Company K First Maryland Regiment in the Civil War and pursued ministry at Roanoke College and Southern Theological Seminary Survived by his widow Alice Kiger his death followed a long career shaping Virginia Lutheran work in several churches and synods.
