Nemo warns Winchester youth to avoid saloons and drink, citing ex Governor Holliday’s abstinence and Austrian surgeon Dr Lorenz’s tea refusal. He urges self control to protect physical and moral strength, framing temperance as key to becoming a better man.
The council grants the Bell Telephone Company its franchise last night and work will begin immediately on installing the plant. Fairfax E. Montague, Bell’s Virginia state superintendent, appoints Harry F. Byrd as local superintendent to arrange service and explain rates, while continuing his newspaper duties.
The 20 year old Robert Reed son of Edward J Reed died in Roanoke Virginia. His funeral was held at 3 pm from his uncle Captain M T Reed's residence on South Braddock Street. The burial service was led by Rev Mc Booger of the Episcopal Church. Interment followed at Mount Hebron Cemetery with pallbearers Arthur Anderson Oscar Lewis Henry Schneider Jr Mack Laws Jasin Faulkner and Dr G H Heut.
Chairman Boaz of the house committee warned the treasury would face strain if county supervisors receive higher per diems as a bill was discussed in Richmond. He noted state revenues ended the last session in good shape but feared deterioration with ongoing adjournment. Representative Bors cited large extra appropriations that threatened treasury stability.

Mrs Edith Harrie Sprinkel wife of Dr Carter C Sprinkel died in Harrisonburg Virginia from pneumonia aged 29 She was the daughter of the late John D Har of Haiconbarg

He cites remaining on the Electoral Board and criticisms over aid to destitute families, including cases involving a poor woman and her husband, as factors in stepping down.

The funeral of William D. Cabell held at 11 am at the Episcopal Church with Rev. Edward Wall officiating. United States Senator John W. Daniel of Virginia attended, coming from Washington as Cabell’s first cousin. Pallbearers listed include Lawrence McCormick, Charles M. Broun, Green, Thos. D. Gold, John B. Neill, and Dr. Rawson. Burial followed at Green Hill Cemetery. Daniel had received a Washington letter from Cabell shortly before his death.
A fire at about 9 pm gutted Isaac Arnold’s store and dwelling with adjacent warehouse in Opequon six miles from Winchester. Arnold’s stock valued at 1100 suffered major loss, with uninsured buildings at 500. Fire origin unknown. several neighbors helped save half the goods and family.
Fairfax College in this city presents a Colonial Concert on February 22 featuring young ladies in colonial costumes. The program will include wartime songs with violins pianos guitars and mandolins. A small admission fee of ten cents is charged with proceeds benefiting Memorial Hospital.

Frederick Rinker a Shenandoah Normal College student from Reliance was shot in the left foot by accidental rifle discharge while hunting rats. The bullet entered below the ankle and lodged in the instep. Dr Stark Riverton could not locate the bullet though the wound is not considered serious.
Attendance at the Friendship Fire Company bazar was large last night though not equal to opening night. About $25 was realized as proceeds. The Rouss Hook and Ladder Company will attend next Monday night and the Sarah Zane Fire Company next Thursday night. A large crowd is expected tonight.
Sb. 20, Harvey Sloat has received from his attorneys the sum of $400, the amount of a compromise with the Southern Railroad for injuries sustained. Some months ago Sloat, while in the companys employ was struck on the head by projection ond passing train. Mrs. Turner, wife of Dr. James Turner, fell and broke her arm, while coming out of her house on yesterday morning. Her husband rendered surgical aid. Miss Maude L. Kennerly, of White Post, is the guest of Mrs. W. J. Kendrick. Mrs. and Miss Levy, of New York, are at Afton Ion.

Major Conrad at his home for a Sunday with family. On Wednesday he will close the government address in the postal fraud trial in Washington. H Kinzel Laws of Manasas Va visits his uncle City Treasurer Geo H Kinsel in this city. Laws formerly a Shenandoah Valley student and with the Blanasa Bank.
