G G Baker of Shenandoah Valley National Bank discovered a relic in the bank archives: the first telegraphic message received in Winchester. The inked strip records the line works well but the pen is too and notes the moment Sunday October 22 1848 at 415 p.m. The tape, once owned by Henry M Brent a late cashier, was kept as a keepsake and is now brought to light.

Badly Kicked By His Own Horse In Rural District Incident
Mr L Goff Clark of Siler county narrowly escaped death when his horse bolted while he aided a petition. The animal slipped, dragged him, kicked him as it moved, then fell over a log. The saddle girth broke and he was freed only after the horse's fall. He survived but was badly hurt.
