Mr. William M. Sumption suffered extensive burns when a kerosene lamp in his cellar exploded and set his clothing alight. His brother and wife helped extinguish the flames as the fire threatened the home, leaving him bedridden with severe injuries but not believed currently life threatening.
The city endured a bitter cold with temperatures dipping below zero. At the United States Weather Station the low reached four below, while local readings varied from two above to two below zero. Winds were calm but occasional snow squalls made conditions uneasy.
Mr Pearl Sumption of Harrisonburg Virginia arrives in Winchester to manage the Winchester Hand Laundry during his brother William Sumption's illness after a fire at Water Street. Pearl Sumption is with the Troy Steam Laundry in Troy and will oversee operations in the interim.
A chimney fire at the residence of Mr. Sol Goldman on North Washington street caused considerable excitement. No alarm was sounded as snow covered roofs but neighbors assisted and the blaze was quickly extinguished.
Regular weekly prayer service will be held at 7 30 tonight in the United Brethren Church. Immediately after, the church official board meeting will follow.

A man in an advanced state of intoxication amused a Main Street bar crowd by placing dollar bills in his mouth and swallowing them. Unable to drink further, he chewed money to satisfy his appetite before collapsing and striking his head on the bar, ending his night at the establishment.
Mrs. Clavers widow of the late Wm F Clavers died this morning in Charlestown West Virginia after a long illness. She was a well known resident of Charlestown and is survived by two children.
Frep. H. Hasxe writes that bringing Herman and Herrmann to Winchester Friday night cost $300 and requests strong public turnout to patronize Sun's Minstrels and Herrmann. He warns Herrmann may be seen only in larger cities and says if support continues he will close for an attraction with 100 cast members at $600.
In the clerk’s office a deed transferring to Samuel J. Wilson of Staunton Virginia the merchandise and fixtures formerly owned by R. E. Chelf the druggist was admitted to record Harry R. Kern a young attorney acted as trustee
Mr. Bol Goldman departed this morning for Baltimore on a business trip. A note mentions new jokes and original ideas at Audi torium on Feb 37.
In a Legislature session on the Chesapeake and its tributaries committee a dispute over the Jordan bill to break the Baylor survey led to tempers flaring. A Frederick county representative allegedly defamed Warwick county Sheriff 8. .S. Curtis prompting a near clash before bystanders intervened and halted the fight.
A marriage license was issued to Peter Hamman and Mary V Neikirk this morning in the Clerk of the County Court office. Both are well known young people of Frederick county with family ties to local, prominent residents. The marriage will take place tomorrow.
Mrs. M. C. Strother purchases 64 acres of land from Mr. G. R. Anderson one mile south of Stephens City in this county for 162 dollars and 50 cents in cash.

Ernest T. Everley and Miss Gussie Larrick, both of Middletown, fled to Clarke County to wed. They met at the railway station in Winchester, secured a license, and were married by Rev. Julian Broaddus at 12:30 PM after arriving in Berryville. Parents objected to the match due to Miss Larrick’s youth.
The Centenary Reformed Church ladies host an oyster supper above E B Capper's jewelry on West Water Street to raise funds. Despite bad weather, a large crowd attended the first night with solid sales of suppers and fancy items. The event continues through the week as organizers aim for a handsome total.
A telegram reports Harold Diffenderfer recovering from a month long typhoid fever in Chicago. His condition had earlier been dire, with his mother traveling to his bedside and recently allowed to speak with him after a critical period.
