Drunken Card Game Tragedy in Charlestown
Washington Bushrod, an about 28 year old Black man, was beaten during a card game at George Sisler's home on Main Street and thrown from a second story window to the street below. Grover Young and Edward Athey are jailed on charges. several others present escaped immediate arrest. The event occurred after midnight Saturday. Washington died from neck injuries before police arrived.

Samuel Baker Neill, Confederate veteran born near Shenandoah Junction Jefferson County West Virginia, died at the Fairfax Hotel Winchester at 75 after a hip fracture from a January 5 fall. Last Smallpox Case Discharged From Berkeley Hospital
Dr. W. T. Hesshaw, health officer of Berkeley county, discharged the last smallpox patient from the county hospital for contagious diseases as cured and closed the hospital Sunday. About 40 cases were treated in the institution and other isolated points in the county, with three cases in Martinsburg. There was not a single death.

Prominent Doctor Hurt In Virginia Car Accident
Dr. William P. McGuire, a leading Valley physician, suffered a fractured nose and badly bruised eyes when his car hit a culvert near Strasburg while en route to Mount Jackson. His chauffeur drove him home to Winchester where Dr. Hunter McGuire and Dr. E. B. Stuart treated him. He remained fatigued but able to work, expecting a full recovery in days.
