The aged minister Rev Dr James Avirett, long a Confederate chaplain and Cumberland Times contributor, died in Cumberland Maryland hospital after a brief decline in health. Born in North Carolina 76 years ago he served in the Civil War with Gen Turner Ashby, authored The Old Plantation, and leaves a son Col John W Avirett editor of the Cumberland Times. Funeral services at Christ Protestant Episcopal Church will be held Monday with interment at Mount Etna Cemetery.

Mrs. Sara Agnes Pryor wife of former Justice Roger Atkinson Pryor and noted author and philanthropist died at her New York home yesterday four days before turning eighty two. She was born February 19 1830 in Halifax County Virginia daughter of Rev Samuel Blair Rice. She married Judge Pryor in Halifax County November 8 1848 and the couple celebrated over 60 wedding anniversaries.

Jail Breakers Captured After Escape From Hager Jail
John Herbert and Edward Mitchell escaped from Hager jail earlier in the week and were captured Wednesday afternoon by Sheriff Snively and Cumberland Valley Railroad Detective John Massie of Winchester. Mitchell choked Warden Staubs during the breakout and was found in an old canal boat near Sharpsburg. both are charged with robbing a white man.
