A Star dispatch reports Sergius, an uncle of the Czar and prominent Russian figure, killed in Moscow with reports stating horses and the Duke were blown to pieces during the attack at three o'clock. The incident heightens concern over the Czar's position amid gloom among subjects.
Charles Barton, murderer of Talhelm at Hagerstown, claims his wealthy father died in Winchester Va. He says Governor Warfield commuted his sentence from hanging to life, and reacts with mixed emotion while breakfasting in jail. He insists on innocence and recalls a wild life on the Western Plains and prior U.S. service.
Franklin Repository notes that Craigmore Czar and Craigmore Crafteman progeny from Chambersburg bred and owned by Miss Florence Fuller dominated the 29th Annual Beach Show of the Winchester Kennel Club in New York. The local pair won multiple seconds and a third amid strong competition from imports. Teddy Fuller sails for Chambersburg to fetch the dog as Lindsey Fuller departs.
The Knights of Pythias lodge plans ahead for a March 11 visit to Strasburg. The local lodge will induct several candidates into Pythian rites and may bring members from Winchester Lodge No. 5 to join the event.
Mr. Geo Bierardh of New York, formerly with Eddy Press months ago, is again connected with the institution.
Mrs. Wheeler and her son Mr. G. R. Wheeler of Cumberland are visiting Mr. Arthur Leafe. Mr. Wheeler serves as secretary and treasurer of the Union Lumber Company.
Miss Rose EK Williams of Brockett and Mr. Charles B. Gosnell of Brunswick Md were wed in Charlestown W Va. The ceremony occurred at the Methodist parsonage by Rev W P Coe. The bride left for Winchester then joined her fiancé for a prearranged marriage and moved to Brunswick Md where he works as a machinist for the Baltimore and Ohio railroad.
Dan Hickerson, about 50, son-in-law of Samuel Beatty, died instantly when a burst blood vessel flooded his brain while returning home with his wife after injuring his leg in a prior accident. He left eleven grown children and widow formerly Miss Beatty. The funeral was held at Mrs. Maddox’s home and burial at Prospect Hill Cemetery with Rev. Fox presiding.
Winchester Aerue No 824 F.O.E. plans consider purchasing the Savage property on north Main Street. If secured at a reasonable price they will fit up a home in the upper portion and rent the lower floor.
Wheat is steady at 1.12 per bushel with no change from yesterday. Prices for other grains and goods are listed: rye 60 cents, corn 2.50, butter 24 cents, eggs 2.50, old hens 8 cents, old roosters 5 cents, turkeys 14 cents. John W. Morgan of Riverton Va seeks pure clover by and large quantities.
Mr Winfield Liggett a leading Harrisonburg attorney and Democratic figure died at his High street home after a ten day illness. Born November 3 1853 he studied at the University of Virginia and was admitted to the bar in 1876. He leaves wife Mary Rush Coffman and six children, plus his father sister and brother. He was noted for sharp legal mind and civic involvement. Funeral arrangements pending.
The Superintendent of Streets and Water has led a force to cut ice from gutters along central Main Street. Workers aim to raise the street surface above the sidewalk to ease a thaw and reduce later damage.
John W. Davis formerly operated at 408 North Kent street and has moved to 42K Piccadilly Street. The notice records a business relocation with current address and former site.
The Rev. Chas. D. Bulla of Braddock Street Methodist Church, South, and Winchester celebrate the imminent receipt of a $2,600 war claim. Senator Thomas H. Martin is lauded for securing tardy justice after years of effort, with attorney G. W. B. Black also acknowledged. The church hall served as a Union hospital during 1862 to 1865.
A Baltimore pair, J. Straith Briscoe and Miss Rosa Briscoe, buried their pet fox terrier with a ceremonial funeral. The white plush casket bore the dog's name, birth and death dates, and a scriptural quotation, carried by train from Baltimore to the Briscoes’ Wheatland farm where the pet was interred after a year of companionship.
Marlboro postmaster Lige Shull saved his store from a morning fire caused by ashes left in a box beside the building. Live coals ignited the floor, a hole burned, and the flames were quickly extinguished with only minor damage reported. Shull, also the local postmaster, escaped serious loss.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Grayson of Cumberland Maryland visit W. K. Grayson on Main Street. Mrs. Grayson once taught elocution at Eastern College. Miss Blanche Naylor and her mother of Cedarville visit Mrs. Albert Greenwalt. Susie Grover undergoing treatment in a Washington hospital. Mr O Harrell S F Rhodes and George Forsythe are in town. Chief Peyton is home with a severe cold.
Miss Mamie Mayhew of Cumberland and Mr Clarance E Penn of Stephenson were married last Tuesday at the bride's home on Miltenberger Street. Rev A H Zimmerman officiated at 7 PM and a large reception followed attended by many friends.
Miss Ethel Kennedy of Charles Town married Charles Nicholson of Baltimore at the Kennedy home in St Marys W Va The ceremony was by Rev Paca Kennedy a brother of the bride The couple will reside in Baltimore The report notes Miss Ethel Jenkins of Millwood spending winter in Baltimore.
Washington dispatch reports the omnibus public buildings bill will not become law this session as Speaker Cannon withholds support. The setback quenches Winchester’s hoped $60,000 government building appropriation and thwarts Hay’s favorable committee report, leaving the project in doubt until Congress reconvenes.
Mr Tharp I Mrs Jackson Tharp of Stephen son county has been very ill and brought to the home of her brother Mr Davis Johnson on Fairmount avenue. Miss Pansy Leafe has returned.
