Soldier of Laurel Brigade Dies After Long Illness
Mr. Gilbert M. Williamson of New Market died last evening after a long illness due to heart disease and Brights disease following a sun stroke years earlier. He served in the Confederate army with the 12th Virginia Cavalry Laurel Brigade under Gen. Rosser. He was Shenandoah sheriff under readjuster rule and later a Valley Turnpike director, a Mason, and Presbyterian church member. Survived by his wife Lucy Rutter and three sons and one daughter. funeral in New Market tomorrow.

Gov Warfield commuted the death sentence of Charles Barton to life imprisonment for the murder of Simon Talheim in Washington County. The clemency cited Barton’s age of eighty one and long drug addiction dulling his moral sense. Talheim, a Civil War veteran, was found murdered and robbed in Hagerstown.

Closing Session of Grand Lodge in Virginia
The one hundred twenty seventh annual communication of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Masons in Virginia opened at the Masonic Temple in Miketea to with over 250 Masons in attendance and all grand officers present. Past Grand Master Duke presented a gold past master jewel to W T Rhea, who was moved to the East, as thanks for his service. The Grand Lodge re elected its officers, with Thomas N. Davis of Lynchburg as Grand Master, and a gavel from the old Virginia State Capitol was presented. Virginia Masons increased by 879 members since the last report.

Scare on Train Over Smallpox Believed Gettysburg College Prank
During a Gettysburg smallpox scare last week a Cumberland Valley train car filled with youths wearing sweaters bearing the letter G caused a stampede as passengers presumed they were Gettysburg College students. It was later explained the group were basketball players from Company G Chicago.

Miss March Dies From Consumption in Winchester
Jena March aged 23 died at 9 10 this morning at her East Water Street home after over a yearlong battle with consumption. She is survived by her mother Mrs Sallie March. Funeral arrangements were incomplete with services planned for Saturday and interment at Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Mail Weighing Underway by Colored Employee
The quadrennial weighing of the railway mail began this week and will last about three months. The Baltimore Third District, led by Superintendent Charles W. Vickery, covers the Western Shore, D C, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. Weighing informs pay for carriers for four years at about eight cents per pound per mile, with a 20 percent estimated gross rise over the last four years. A colored Post Office employee has worked the Winchester route on the Cumberland Valley, under Shug Evans, a colored liveryman, during weighings.

Engine frozen fast to the rails near Gaithers on B&O line

Escape from jail after scaffold removal at Charlottesville
