Bid on Franchise Not Awarded
City Council in special session opened the bid for a telephone franchise. Only Southern Bell submitted a bid, and after discussion the item was laid on the table until Friday night’s special meeting. The council expects a price agreement acceptable to both sides before final passage. The Bell rep noted similar fees in Manchester and Frederickburg, while acetylene gas franchise is set for final approval Friday. The council also approved smallpox claims totaling 1,771.67 and authorized borrowing 1,200 for those claims. The Auditorium lease was authorized for bidding.
