Paul Graham, farmer and scholar renowned as a historian, died yesterday at the Parish Farm in this county after a long illness at about 60 years of age. He came to Winchester after the Civil War and lived here, remaining a lifelong student of history and literature until his death.
Mrs Sisan Reid Paulding of Norfolk Va known in Winchester was granted an absolute divorce from Gouveneur Paulding II a well known clubman of New York and Boston in the City Circuit Court deserted the couple eloped to Washington wed in Japan disputes arose on a world trip Paulding left Norfolk no defense filed Miss Reid resumes her maiden name and lives with her mother Also a political notice from a Frederick County candidate for treasurer seeks Democratic primary support.
A large barn on Mrs. Eliza Bowen’s farm two and a half miles from White Post burned, with contents including corn fodder farm machinery vehicles and harness. Loss on barn about 1500 with 500 insured. contents insured 1800. Sparks from an engine near the barn and a steady wind caused the fire. neighbors failed to save the structure. the barn belonged to Bowen and the contents to Mr. R L Littleton of Boyce.
In Brunswick Md on Thursday a strange black man tried to assault Mrs Tenney wife of a Baltimore and Ohio conductor. The attack failed the man was arrested and jailed in Frederick. Local talk of lynching surged but a small improvised mob dissolved without action.
Notes from Chambersville report Sunday services at Round Hill M E Church led by Rev. C In Potter. Community members include Robert Daughtery ill with pneumonia and Miss Leeda Elliott away tending her brother Claude Elliott causing school closure. Other local visits and illnesses noted.
Rev. S K Wine will conduct sacramental services at Red Bud United Brethren Church next Sunday morning at 10 30 o clock An offering for foreign missions will be taken.
Fair tonight and Saturday with slightly warmer temperatures. A health note reports Mrs. Joseph T. Brown in North Main Street home ailing seriously and worsening last night. Reference also to Philadelphia.
President Roosevelt announced that the U S and Japan must settle their dispute promptly. He warned that failure to adjust the troubles could trigger a special session of Congress. Floral tributes pour in for Juror Bolton's wife who died yesterday, delaying the Thaw trial.
Summit Point resident John Snyder, age 73 and 6 months, died at 3 a.m. at his brother D W Snyder’s home after a paralysis stroke two weeks before Christmas. He leaves two sons Neill of Salisbury and Potvey of Martinsburg W Va two brothers Strother and Tom and two sisters Katie and Fannie Snyder. Funeral at D W Snyder’s home Sunday at 10 a.m. Interment Edge Hill Cemetery Charles Town W Va.

The show includes Robinson Crusoe, Farmer, Hopkins and The Forks up Willow Creek with elaborate scenery and effects. Prices in Winchester are 10 20 and 30 cents. Charles Town, Feb 15 Travers Hedges a 24 year old night operator for the Chesapeake and Potomac company died at his home at six this morning after an accidental shooting last night. A coroner's inquest found death was caused by an accidental firearm discharge when Hedges while examining a revolver held it to his temple and pulled the trigger. His companion William Hesser is not blamed. the incident occurred during a mark shooting at the exchange district. Hedges had shown promise in baseball and was popular in Charles Town and Winchester. His mother Mrs William Hedges survives. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
Mr John Cather of the Northwestern Grade suffers a painful injury when a runaway roadster unseated him and his companion during sleighing. The companion fell on Mr Cather and sprained him. T.E. White returns from Bardane to care for his critically ill mother Mrs M E White. Mr G F Millers Sons advertises Penns Cherry Elixir at 25 cents a bottle. Mr and Mrs Egbert Van Alstyne arrive from New York to visit Mrs Van Alstyne's mother Mrs George R Henry. We will pay 5 cents apiece for 26 Evening Star of Feb.
Officials indicate a site for the Winchester Government building will be chosen within a day or two. Messrs Robert M. Henry J H Henry and attorney Robert T. Barton were in Washington at Treasury Department offices to press the site selection. They returned to Winchester last night and declined to discuss the conference details.
Ahn Ww Willem Rath has been appointed travelling freight agent for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the Valley. He succeeds J. C. Hartzell as chief clerk in Baltimore traffic. Rath, twenty-two years with B&O, is based in Baltimore but will travel the Valley. He already has many friends in Winchester and Charles Town.
The State Library Board met in Richmond and accepted the resignation of State Librarian Kennedy. No action will be taken until the committee reports are considered.
Prof. George C. Shepherd entertained about twenty five guests at the home of Mr and Mrs John 5 Miller on Fairmount Avenue last night. The enjoyable evening featured music and later refreshments.
Miss Mamie Barr daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward M Barr slipped on icy pavement in front of John M Siecks home on Fairmount Avenue. She sprained an ankle and was carried to her North Braddock Street home by carriage.
The My Wife's Family company arrived at noon over the Cumberland Valley and will perform a return engagement at the auditorium tonight. Miss Emma Reneel is visiting, with Miss Bila Hemmond noted among attendees.
Mrs William S Love received a telegram from Paducah announcing the death yesterday evening of Mrs Tone P Campbell at her Paducah home. She was active in charity work and a Paducah Presbyterian. Surviving is her son John Campbell a Shenandoah Valley Academy student. Funeral will be in Paducah Saturday.
Last night at the Auditorium in Winchester a clever well trained cast presented at the OM Cross Roads. Despite a small audience the performance drew enthusiastic praise and liberal applause. The play was well staged with good scenic effects and the entire company received commendation. A quartet of female singers was encored repeatedly.
The case of Peter Good, sentenced for the murder of Fannie Stroop in Luray, Va., is being prepared for a potential Supreme Court review in Richmond. If the court lacks time to rule before the execution date, a stay may be issued. new trials are uncertain. An unrelated ad promotes Penn Nerve and Blood Tonic at 50c. The Woodstock Herald features Hon. J. M. Bauserman as State Hospital Commissioner.
Horace Plant became the first prisoner in Shenandoah’s new jail, dubbed the Hotel Plant after the Egyptian custom. A telegram from Harrisonburg led police to stop him on the brass theft charge, he was jailed on arrival and later fined five dollars and given fifteen days.
An antique classified ad touts rheumatic pain relief with no miracles and urges common sense. It promotes a liquid bottle sold by G F Millers Sons at $1 and tablet form at 50 cents.
A sales brochure urges advertisers to use the Sales Directory to notify the public of sales at low cost. It argues most people forget dates and bills are torn down, proposing directory ads as a cheaper alternative to mail notices.
